As we enter into the final week of our matching grant campaign, we want to share some quick insights about the role of education in our communities. Let’s take a look at some ongoing barriers, our impact, and where we’re headed in the future!

BARRIERS

In a recent survey conducted for the families in our community, the responses we received show not only how important education is to them, but the current obstacles they face for their children to thrive.

Concerns with Finishing Public School – When asked, “What is your biggest concern for your children?”, many expressed concerns that revolved around their children's ability to complete their education. Displaced populations and those affected by poverty often face educational gaps due to standardized curriculums that don't cater to individual needs. Once students start falling behind, catching up becomes challenging without additional support. This can lead to disengagement, loss of confidence, and ultimately difficulty in completing their studies.

The Effects of Poverty – When asked about their living conditions, many of our families revealed the challenges and anxiety they experience in securing basic necessities for their households. From lacking electricity to multiple family members sharing limited sleeping spaces, poverty casts a wide range of challenges on the families in our community. The constant financial stress and uncertainty about the future add to the burdens they carry. These harsh circumstances take a toll on both mental and physical well-being, hindering the ability to access vital resources for academic success.

Lack of Transportation – Many families in our community face a big problem when it comes to getting their children to school: transportation. In fact, 40% of our families expressed that transportation was the main barrier to getting their kids to school. With household members working tirelessly to provide for their families, many are unable to accompany their children to school during the day. The closest public schools are also oftentimes located far away or in unsafe areas, making walking to school an impractical option for younger children. Additionally, almost half of the families in our community don't have access to a car or other forms of transportation.

Filling in the Educational Gap – When asked about the impact of our education program on their children, several families expressed remarkable accomplishments in their academic abilities. Some shared that their children have learned now how to read fluently, multiply numbers, identify vowels, and accomplish other academic milestones.

Community – The impact of our education program extends beyond academic growth! Many families reported that their children have become more sociable, open, and confident since joining our program. This community aspect plays a vital role in shaping children's holistic development, instilling them with the self-assurance and social skills necessary to navigate the world independently with resilience and confidence.

Social Behavior – The feedback from our community speaks volumes: our program has not only enhanced children's academic abilities, but it has also positively influenced their attitudes and behavior. Many families shared that their kids have become more respectful, responsible, and disciplined both in school and at home. Our program has not only helped shape their behavior, but it has helped them develop both socially and emotionally!

Continued Support – Looking ahead, we feel incredibly optimistic for the future: with a strong commitment to serving those in need, we want to continue to expand our program and reach more within our community. As we move forward, our program hopes to provide additional resources, support, and opportunities for growth, and continue to empower students to overcome obstacles and realize their full potential.

Programs for Teens – We also recognize the pressing educational needs for the teens in our community. Unfortunately, teenagers often face unique challenges due to economic responsibilities as they are often forced to prioritize responsibilities at home due to the burdens of poverty. In the future, we’d love to be able to develop and implement a specialized education program that empowers and equips these teens with the necessary tools for a brighter future, providing them a sustainable future to thrive independently.

Empowering a Generation – Through our programs and the work we implement in the future, we are ultimately committed to empowering the next generation to break the vicious cycle of poverty. Our goal is to equip our communities with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to thrive independently to create a brighter future for themselves and their families. Through education, we envision a transformed community where every individual has the opportunity to reach their full potential and enjoy the fullness of life.
