October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness and remind survivors they are not alone. LUM is committed to supporting neighbors who have experienced domestic violence by offering practical assistance, connecting them with resources, and providing a compassionate place to turn for help.
Recently, a young woman came to LUM’s Financial Assistance Program seeking help with rent. Staff noticed visible bruises and a slight limp. In a private conversation, she gently expressed concern for her well-being. She shared that her injuries were the result of domestic violence and that she and her two young children were now safe. LUM connected her with resources through YWCA Greater Lafayette and provided rent assistance to ease one immediate burden as she began rebuilding her life.
Sometimes, the most meaningful help goes beyond financial assistance. It means taking time to notice, listen, and remind someone they are seen, cared for, and not alone. Due to the generous support of our donors, LUM can continue to be a lifeline of help and hope for every neighbor who comes to us. This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, help build a community where survivors feel supported, respected, and empowered to move forward on their own terms.
