FDA Releases New Nutrition Facts Final Guidance
Last Thursday, the FDA released a new guidance for industry on  converting units of measure on the Nutrition and Supplement Facts labels . Surprisingly, the agency appears to have skipped straight to a "Final Guidance" without having issued a "Draft Guidance" first. The guidance provides step-by-step instructions to manufacturers on how they may convert the previous units of measure for certain nutrients to the new units in the updated Nutrition Facts label. It also provides conversion factors that can be used for each of these nutrients and example calculations for converting to the new units of measure in the revised NFP.

This is the second guidance the FDA has released this summer despite the fast approaching deadline for converting most FDA nutrition facts panels by January 1, 2020. Earlier in June, the FDA released a final guidance on single ingredient sugars, syrups, and cranberry products where they debuted a controversial NFP format that omitted the "Includes Added Sugars" title for single ingredient sugars and added a separate clarifying footnote below the standard one (see illustration on right).

All told there has been a flurry of guidances this year, with four other Labeling and Nutrition guidances announced this spring.
