The new Elk year is just around the corner and we can finally announce the big news: there will be even more Freedom Grants in 2017-18!
We received a record number of applications last year, and many people asked us why we didn't have more Freedom Grants. Well, we listened! This year, 200 Lodges will receive Freedom Grants of $2,000 each.
Applications for these competitive grants go online July 1 and are due July 31.
Looking for ideas? Take a cue from Grand Junction, Colo., Lodge No. 575 and do something a little different. Elks at this Lodge used a grant to facilitate an overnight rafting trip for veterans with physical disabilities. The trip allows for 10 veterans to exercise skills learned throughout physical therapy in a novel way.
Almost Sunrise is a new, feature-length documentary that follows two Iraq veterans, Tom Voss and Anthony Anderson as they struggle with--and seek healing from--depression upon returning home from military service.
The Almost Sunrise team shares the Elks' passion for serving veterans. They are delighted to bring the film to local Elk Lodges across the country who might use the film for local programming, community building and awareness raising.
Help Heal Veterans (formerly known as Help Hospitalized Veterans), a long-time Elks partner, provide free therapeutic craft kits to recovering veterans. Each year, the Elks Leather Program donates extra hides to assist them with their mission. In exchange for our donations, Elks can order free craft kits for veterans in non-VA facilities! To order kits, complete this form and submit to it Veterans Leather Chair Dennis McAleese.
