While racially diverse females from across the socio-economic spectrum obtain abortions, the majority of abortion recipients in the US including NY, are poor or low-income. Medicaid, which offers health coverage to millions of low-income people, pays for nearly 30% of all US abortions, and serves as the second largest funder of abortions, after self-pay.
Disadvantaged women and girls who receive Medicaid and experience unplanned pregnancies need our help. They need access to well- funded, life-promoting healthcare; services that will help them bring their pregnancies to term, serve as birth mothers and parents, and also assist their little ones to grow and thrive. The High Court in Medina recognized this by supporting the authority of every US State to redirect taxpayer-funded Medicaid resources away from abortion services and toward life-affirming, comprehensive healthcare providers—such as Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs)—that do not perform abortions.
Our poor sisters often 'choose' abortion out of desperation, a combination of economic, emotional, psychological and familial deprivation. States like NY allow Medicaid to pay for an unlimited number of abortions, and a sizable number of females in NY obtain multiple abortions. According to NY’s most recently published vital statistics over a five year period – on average annually in NY – 6,677 of all abortions each year are performed on mothers who have already experienced 5+ previous abortions.
