ATM robber shot dead in Hammond
Greetings!

ActionNews17.com is following two breaking news stories this afternoon:

AN17.com has learned that the ATM robber was shot last night at Capital One Bank on S. Morrison Blvd. in Hammond, and he died from the gun shot wounds.

The ATM robber is being identified as Thomas Anthony Evans, Jr. 20 years old, from the Oak Ridge Church Road area in Kentwood.

Hammond Police Chief Roddy Devall said based on materials in Evans' vehicle and on his person, police are "99.9 percent sure" Evans was the ATM robber. He was shot twice and died from his wounds. Police responded to the call around 12:03 this morning. Devall said Evans was allegedly armed, and the gun matched the description of the weapon used in several other ATM cases in the last few days.

Police say they are 99.9 percent sure this is the suspect who had committed approximately six of these hold-ups.

Police say the victim(s) who shot Evans drove off. Devall is asking the individual(s) to come forward, meet with investigators, and help them piece together what happened. Police are working with bank officials to get the surveillance tape from last night, so he expects they will be able to identify the individual(s) involved. Devall told AN17.com this morning that an individual does have a right to protect himself/herself in that situation.

In other news, Louisiana State Police is working a case of a single-car fatality accident overnight in St. Helena Parish.

State Police have not been able to identify the driver of that vehicle as of this morning.

Police believe the the crash occurred as a 2011 Buick LaCrosse was traveling south on LA 37 when, for unknown reasons, it traveled off the roadway to the left.  As the Buick left the paved roadway, it struck several trees prior to coming to rest on the east side of the highway.  The unidentified white female driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Helena Parish Coroner's Office.  The driver was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and alcohol use is unknown pending the results of a toxicology exam.

Troopers are continuing their investigation into the events of the crash and efforts to identify the driver are ongoing.  Anyone with information regarding the crash or the identity of the white female victim is urged to contact Troop L at 985-893-6250.
