Standing Together: Supporting Suicide Prevention

in Sacramento’s Muslim Community

September is Suicide Prevention Month, a time to support our community with compassion and care. Recognizing warning signs—such as withdrawal, hopelessness, changes in behavior, or expressing a desire to give up—can help us identify those at risk. If you notice a loved one struggling, reach out with empathy, listen without judgement, and guide them toward trusted support—whether family, peer supporters, community leaders, or mental health professionals. Together, we can foster healing, remind one another of belonging, and uphold the value of every life in our community.

MAS-SSF works every day to help reduce the stigma around suicidal thoughts. It begins with compassion and open conversations. When we treat mental health struggles like any other health challenge, people feel less alone and more willing to seek help. Listening without judgement, offering support, and spreading awareness can encourage those at risk to reach out safely.

The Family & Youth Institute, a national organization focused on the mental health of Muslim Americans across their lifetime, has developed a Prevention Tool Kit to provide all of us with knowledge and tools to potentially prevent, intervene and address suicide in our community.
