Breast Cancer Awareness
During October (sometimes called Pink Ribbon Month), breast cancer survivors are honored and an effort is made to bring more awareness to breast cancer prevention. According to the American Cancer Society, female breast cancer rates are staying steady in the past decade and death rates are falling. In California in 2021, there were an estimated 30,730 new cases and 4,730 deaths. The National Breast Cancer Foundation encourages everyone, especially women, to be aware of early symptoms and early detection methods. Locally, the Carol Hatton Breast Care Center is available in Ryan Ranch for diagnosis and treatment. Also visit Monterey Library for resources on breast cancer prevention.

Sweet Thursday Hooptedoodles!
Our online literary and local history discussions continue celebrating Sweet Thursday by John Steinbeck, a sequel to Cannery Row. Check the MPL website for all the details! Working with several local partners, we present:
Monterey Peninsula Sand Dunes Eco System. Celebrate "Cannery Row Days: Sweet Thursday Hooptedoodles" with guest speaker David Shonman as he explores the ecological systems of the Monterey Peninsula’s sand dunes. Shonman is a coastal biologist and former Board Chairman of Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History. Thurs., October 21 at 4:00 pm.
Natural Fluctuations? Seastars, Urchins, Kelps, and Squids. Guest speaker Greg Cailliet of Moss Landing Marine Laboratories will explore the cycles (some natural, while others human-caused) that have occurred over many decades in the Monterey Bay ecosystems. Both the real Ed Ricketts, at the Pacific Biological Laboratories, and the fictional "Doc" of Steinbeck's Sweet Thursday, were constantly observing the marine environment. Thurs., October 28 at 4:00 pm.

Library Staff Picks! What Are We Reading?
|
We're all busy, but we love to read, right? Take a look at what some Monterey Library staff are reading recently... or listening to. (Reviews taken from AudioFile magazine in Overdrive; all titles downloaded from Northern California Digital Library)
NOMADLAND by Jessica Bruder
This audiobook explores a subculture of Americans who have taken to life on the road in
response to financial stress. Don't call them homeless, though; these nomads, most of them victims of the disappearing middle class, prefer "houseless." Author Jessica Bruder immersed herself in their world for three years and reports in depth on the positives and negatives of such a lifestyle.
THE ORCHARDIST by Amanda Coplin
The implacable hand of fate, and the efforts of a quiet, reclusive man to reclaim two young
sisters from their harrowing past, are the major forces at play in this immensely affecting first novel. In a verdant valley in the Pacific Northwest during the early years of the 20th century, middle-aged Talmadge tends his orchards of plum, apricot, and apples, content with his solitary life. Two young sisters, Jane and Della, both pregnant by an opium-addicted, violent brothel owner from whom they have escaped, touch Talmadge’s otherwise stoic heart.
800 HUNDRED GRAPES by Laura Dave
Who knew it takes 800 grapes to make one bottle of wine? That and many other fascinating, arcane facts fill this romantic peek behind the scenes of a Sonoma, California vineyard and the offbeat members of the family that owns it. Narrator Joy Osmanski's feisty delivery is just right for Georgia, the 30-year-old lawyer who discovers that her too-good-to-be-true fiancé is too good to be true.
DOG YEARS by Mark Doty
In a blend of memoir, literary criticism, and reflections on dogs and death, Mark Doty recounts the making of his human-canine family. As his partner, Wally's, death becomes inevitable, Doty rescues Beau from an animal shelter, believing the Golden Retriever will ease his pain and become a companion for their aging black retriever, Arden. When Beau becomes ill, caretaking rescues Doty from depression. His perceptions celebrate the connection that lets human and animals transcend tragedy and keep hope alive. Doty's reading has a singsong quality.
CIRCLING THE SUN by Paula McLain
Aviator Beryl Markham's (1902-1986) solo flight across the Atlantic in 1936 earned her worldwide attention. Narrator Katherine McEwan offers a soft, youthful feel to Beryl's early life. Her mother leaves the harsh farm life of British East Africa and returns to England with her son, leaving 2-year-old Beryl with her father. Even so, McEwan delivers credible accents--African and British--and her melodious voice is a fine match for Paula McLain's lush descriptions of Africa.
