COVID Recovery and Paid Family Leave Updates
"The Biden administration has announced the details of its COVID recovery plan, which includes, among other policies, a reinstatement and expansion of critical emergency leave provisions. As you know, the emergency leave provisions authorized by the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) expired at the end of 2020. As this crisis continues in parts of the country or there are considerations for reopening the economy, the Biden administration has taken an important next step to reinstate and expand access to paid sick days and paid leave for millions of Americans.
The Biden package will reinstate emergency leave provisions and remove the exemptions for businesses with more than 500 employees or less than 50 employees. The plan will expand eligibility to include federal workers and increase reimbursement to up to $1,400 a week-- this will provide full wage reimbursement to workers earning up $73,000 annually. Under this plan state and local governments and employers with under 500 employers will be reimbursed for the cost of this leave. These leave provisions would be available through September 31, 2021.
In addition to an expansion of emergency leave, the package outlines an additional $1,400 stimulus checks for families, and expansion of unemployment benefits, financial assistance, and anti-eviction protections, among other measures."

Lactation Support for Low-Wage Workers Brief
Available now
The Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health (MCAH) Division announces the release of the Lactation Support for Low-Wage Workers Brief. The Brief addresses the public health issue that lactation accommodation is less likely to be provided to low-wage workers than high-wage workers. It shares actions needed to ensure that all low-wage workers in California have the opportunity to reach their breastfeeding goals.

How Can Lactation Consultants Access the COVID Vaccine?
From Lactation Education Resources: "As the COVID vaccine is rolled out across the United States, many lactation consultants employed in hospitals, clinics, health departments, and other settings are already being offered the opportunity to be vaccinated through their employers. However, private practice lactation consultants who are self-employed are now wondering when they might have the opportunity to become vaccinated.
This post will be reviewing the vaccine rollout process and how it applies to private practice lactation consultants; it is limited in scope to the United States, as each country is developing their own vaccination plans."

When you invest in one lactation student from BreastfeedLA, you invest in a multiplier effect that has a profound impact on Los Angeles' most complex problems of discrimination, poverty, and violence.
It only costs $495 to champion one student to complete our 45 hour lactation education specialist course and $990 to complete our 90 hour lactation consultant course. However, we greatly appreciate gifts of any amount—a single contribution holds the potential to ignite the power of a future lactation consultant and forever change our world!
When she is strengthened, she advocates for herself and changes her community.
