As we approach the end of 2019, BreastfeedLA is not slowing down with regards to our on-going advocacy work supporting lactating families in Southern California.
Did you have an opportunity to see our
Giving Tuesday
request? We hope to fund the BreastfeedLA Resource Directory in 2020 with donations rather than with fee-based applications.
At BreastfeedLA, we continue to fight for health equity that enables breastfeeding advocates to deliver services.
Every person has a right to a fair shot at achieving their full breastfeeding potential and goals, regardless of social advantage and disadvantage.
Help us offer all lactation providers the opportunity to list their services, regardless of their ability to pay, in order to ensure that our families can find them when they need their assistance. This will allow our directory to feature a diverse group of lactation professionals who mirror the communities all over L.A. County. BreastfeedLA staff and board have committed to donate to this important tool to further health equity.
Will you stand with us?

Another way we are gearing up for December is by
SHOPPING! As you choose gifts this holiday season for colleagues, business partners, and loved ones (or even for yourself!) please consider supporting BreastfeedLA by purchasing a gift from our NEW online merchandise store. A mug, tote, tank or t-shirt would be a wonderful way to show your support for breastfeeding families. New styles are being added!
|
|
As always, we are grateful for all of you this holiday season and for all support you provide to breastfeeding families throughout Los Angeles. Enjoy your winter celebrations!
Warm Regards,
|

Lactation Accommodations Law SB-142
BreastfeedLA was interviewed for a story on the bill SB-142 that passed last month supporting lactation accommodations in the workplace.
Authored by Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom,
SB-142
requires employers to provide mothers a secure and private space close to their workstation with a chair and a table or shelf to hold their pumping equipment, as well as access to electricity. Running water and a refrigerator or cooler for their milk must also be located close to their workstations.

Breastfeeding tied to lower risk of diabetes, high blood pressure
From
Reuters Health
"Women who breastfeed may be less likely to develop diabetes and high blood pressure, a research review suggests.
Investigators examined data from four previous studies looking at the connection between lactation and diabetes in a total of about 206,000 women. They also analyzed data from five previous studies on the link between lactation and high blood pressure in a total of about 255,000 women.
Overall, mothers who breastfed for more than 12 months were 30% less likely to develop diabetes and 13% less likely to develop high blood pressure than women who didn’t nurse babies that long."

When you invest in one lactation student from BreastfeedLA, you invest in a multiplier effect that has a profound impact on Los Angeles' most complex problems of discrimination, poverty, and violence.
It only costs $495 to champion one student to complete our 45 hour lactation education specialist course and $990 to complete our 90 hour lactation consultant course. However, we greatly appreciate gifts of any amount—a single contribution holds the potential to ignite the power of a future lactation consultant and forever change our world!
When she is strengthened, she advocates for herself and changes her community.
