Did you catch our exciting news yesterday? In partnership with the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health and the Care First Community Investment African American Infant and Maternal Mortality Doula program, BreastfeedLA is proud to announce the launch of a groundbreaking program at Century Regional Detention Facility, where we’ll be offering essential prenatal education and lactation support to incarcerated pregnant and lactating individuals. As the only program of its kind in California—and just the second in the nation—this initiative is a monumental step toward ensuring every parent, no matter their circumstances, has the opportunity to give their baby the healthiest start in life.
Led by BreastfeedLA’s very own Brenda Vieyra and Jennifer Roberson, this program will:
- Deliver lactation education to incarcerated pregnant and lactating individuals, emphasizing the life-saving benefits of human milk for infant health, bonding, and development.
- Provide direct patient care and one-on-one lactation support to those who give birth while incarcerated, ensuring a strong breast/chestfeeding relationship and a sustainable milk supply for the long-term well-being of both birthing person and child.
Additionally, BreastfeedLA will ensure that the milk expressed by these individuals reaches their infants by:
- Assisting with pumping, teaching proper techniques, and developing a schedule to maintain and boost milk supply.
- Offering guidance on storing and handling human milk to ensure it is safely preserved and transported.
- Shipping the milk directly to the infants' caretakers so babies can receive their parent’s milk even if separated by incarceration.
- Providing education to caregivers on optimal infant feeding practices and milk storage guidelines to ensure the milk remains safe and beneficial.
This life-changing program is a crucial part of breaking down barriers to breast/chestfeeding, building stronger parent-child connections, and supporting the health and well-being of incarcerated families.
But we need your help to keep this program going. Your generous donations will directly fund initiatives like this one, allowing us to reach more families and provide the resources they desperately need.
Please consider donating today to support this vital program and ensure that every parent—regardless of their circumstances—has the opportunity to nourish their baby with human milk.
Together, we can make a lasting difference. Donate now and be part of this transformative change.
