Logo Breathe in August!

A group of 17 women from Breathe Los Gatos, yoga teacher Christina Enneking and I recently returned from our service trip to Malawis Tukombo Village in Sub-Saharan Africa. We spent several days at a medical facility that with one medical assistant, serves over 200 people a day. We brought solar lights made through a local non-profit called Lighting for Literacywhich works with Jack Fischer School in Los Gatos where their students make the solar lighting and various non-profit groups - like us - travel to locations around the world and install them.

While some of us installed lights, others finished building a brick wall inside a building that eventually will be used to cook food and house guardians and patients of the clinic, many of whom are pregnant girls who walk here from long distances to give birth. All the food that is made for those who come for medical support has been made over four small camp fires. The staff at the medical center couldnt afford the mortar to finish the building on their own. We covered that nominal expense of $150. While we installed lights and built the wall with bricks that the villagers had made by hand, another group of us used FLIP cameras to interview people of all ages so we could better understand what it was like to live in Malawi, to have these circumstances, to be in their shoes. Another group played games with about fifty children for hours on end (picture above).

Each morning we practiced yoga. Our yoga alleviated the stress from what we saw and learned each day: 50% of the people have HIV-AIDS, Malaria is rampant, an education is only available at no cost until secondary school, no social services, and no matter where we looked, there were many orphans and pregnant teenage girls. I was viscerally reminded every day that a regular yoga practice makes it possible to go where its truly difficult in life because no matter who we are and what our circumstances, it can serve as a means of emptying out what gets in the way of being present. Through the yoga practice, the bonds we forged with one another and the people who live in Malawi, we left completely moved and inspired to continue building relationships in that part of the world. We have come home looking forward to creating more opportunities to put our yoga in action by providing ways for yoga practitioners to learn how to be of greater service here locally, nationally and internationally. And yes, well be going back to Africa and yes, well be hosting a slide show of our experiences at Breathe this fall.

Thank you to all of you who donated clothing, medical supplies and money. With your donations we will be providing the medical facility with a much needed ambulance. Right now they have a bike with a carrier trailer on the back end. Well show you pictures of what you contributed to once they purchased it.

And in this part of the world, a big thank you to two teachers who have brought so much to everyone at Breathe. Joan Chanpong will be teaching through the end of August when shell leave to prepare to give birth. And Kent Bond who was incredibly gracious when he offered to teach at Breathe when we first opened, despite the fact that he had Willow Glen Yoga just down the road. He helped me get Breathe going and I thank him so very much!

All the offerings below are for you. Enjoy! We are so lucky to have so many bright and talented people teaching at Breathe.

Savor the summer and see you on the mat!!

Love,
Jennifer and everyone at Breathe.

Southern India Yoga & Ayurveda
with Jennifer Prugh & Gary Kissiah

January 17th - 30th, 2015

Join Jennifer Prugh and Gary Kissiah for a yoga adventure of a lifetime to southern India! This trip combines visits to ancient temple complexes, the Aurobindo ashram, the fascinating city of Pondicherry, a wildlife preserve for elephants and historical sites including Muhabalipuram, a UNESCO world heritage site, that have played a significant part in shaping the tradition of yoga. The trip culminates with three days at a beautiful Marari Resort, an Ayervedic spa on the beaches of Kerala. Ayurveda is the ancient but still mainstream medical practice of India. You will have the opportunity to have a health assessment by an Ayurvedic practitioner and a variety of body therapies offered throughout each day you are there. Throughout the trip there will be a yoga practice each morning and a yoga philosophy lecture each evening. If you are a yoga practitioner your understanding of your practice will be radically deepened. Whether or not you practice yoga (and you dont have to practice to come on this trip), you will return home profoundly inspired and rejuvenated.

BREATHE SUPPORTS

Floating Lotus

Saturdays, June 2nd - August 16th
12:30pm - 1:30pm & 2:00pm - 3:00pm

Yoga on a paddleboard has become an ideal way in which to practice yoga in a pool, pond, lake or the ocean. The principles that are taught on the yoga mat become essential and even more appreciated on the board. Enhancing the experience of concentration and moving with the breath on water, Floating Lotus creates a floating classroom that allows students to develop core strength, balance, do things you never thought possible, and have a great time outdoors. Much like the human mind, the board constantly shifts, moves, flows in different directions. Yet, within all this movement, there is a sense of peace inherent in being on the water. Yoga on Water is a wonderful addition to ones yoga practice and a great way in which to be introduced to the principles of yoga.
