Autumn is a beautiful season but can be fraught with challenges for people with lung diseases such as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and asthma. Keep rescue inhalers at the ready; avoid triggers such as wood smoke, hay, and wet moldy leaf piles; and get a flu shot. Then enjoy the show!

Vaping Unveiled™
Vaping dangers and fatalities are in the headlines as so much is unknown about the effects of taking a heated mixture of chemicals directly into lungs.
After presenting Vaping Unveiled to 7,500 individuals in 150 communities, Breathe NH has found that most people, from parents to medical personnel, have a false perception of harm regarding vaping and Juuling; they don't understand the risk. Parents and youth are also unaware of the dangers of nicotine addiction (99% of vapes contain nicotine, which provides the "buzz"). Learn more about e-cigarettes and Juul
here

November Is COPD Awareness Month
NH COPD Plan 2.0 -- Coming Soon!
|
|
 |
New Hampshire was one of the first states to create a COPD Plan in 2014, to address the many challenges of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: lack of awareness about the burden of COPD on patients, families, and caregivers; and the need for research to help prevent it, and improve diagnosis and treatment. We've updated the research and data and will present the NH COPD Plan 2.0 in November, just in time for COPD Awareness Month.

New Hampshire Legislative Update
Breathe New Hampshire is very disappointed in the Legislature's decision to raise the age of sales of tobacco products (including e-cigarettes and vapes) to 19 from 18.
This is not a proven public-health strategy and is not based on science. See our full statement at this
link
.
In other news, the Legislature passed HB511 which clarified policies related to youth vaping, particularly in schools.

We're sad to report that
Larry Reid
, a volunteer since 2014, passed shortly after this year's cruise from COPD and lung cancer. We'll miss his humor and Yankee common sense.

Breathe NH in the Community:
Diane & Claudette Laliberte
For 15 years these retired sisters from Manchester have been very active volunteers, serving on the cruise, in our office, at our Golf Classic, whenever they can. They are also world travelers, having been to New Zealand, Australia, Europe, and they "haven't neglected" the U.S. (where they've been known to frequent a casino or two). They also love to play computer and word games, "to keep our minds active." We enjoy their wit and hands-on willingness to help. Their next trip? "Whenever the mood suits us--and I have the cash," said Claudette, at right above. It may be the Rocky Mountaineer train.
Our November Night of Thanks will not be held this year. Watch for news of a revamped volunteer appreciation event in spring 2020.
