May is Asthma & Allergy Awareness Month

o Did you know more Americans than ever before have asthma? While there is no cure, it can be managed with proper prevention and treatment.

o According to the 2021 Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) Report, 70-80% of asthma patients do not use their inhalers correctly. Check out this collection of videos from National Jewish Health to help patients learn how to properly use their asthma devices.

Take Down Tobacco Day

Formerly known as Kick Butts Day, this day of action brings awareness and education to youth use of tobacco products.

The potential for nicotine addiction at a young age, creating continued use of tobacco products. Young people are specifically being marketed to and targeted as customers by the tobacco industry.

86.3% of middle and high school students report being exposed to pro tobacco ads in stores, in magazines and on the internet.

Each spring, in recognition of Earth Day (April 22), Breathe New Hampshire kicks off our Bag the Butts™. Free toolkits for clean-ups are provided to groups upon request. Bag the Butts is not just for Earth Day. Take advantage of the nice weather

neighborhood, or community clean-up!

Breathe NH continues to provide this program to schools, organizations and communities throughout the state. Virtual and in-person formats available.

FDA to Regulate Synthetic Nicotine Products

Congress has given the FDA authority to regulate products made with synthetic nicotine as tobacco products. A legislative provision was included in the federal government funding bill passed by the House and Senate and signed by the President.

This closes a loophole in federal law that some e-cigarette companies were using to their advantage while avoiding regulation. Originally, tobacco products were defined as those made from or derived from tobacco. Synthetic nicotine is made in a lab. Similar to other tobacco products, flavors are used in synthetic nicotine products making them more appealing to youth. Nicotine is highly addictive, from tobacco plants and when created in a lab.
