As expected, Europeans dominated in the turf races at Keeneland on Breeders’ Cup weekend, and there were really no serious surprises. Every winner had a playable angle.

On ‘Future Stars Friday’ trainer Charles Appleby and jockey William Buick won the Juvenile Turf Sprint with a thread-the-field ride aboard Mischief Magic, and trainer Aidan O’Brien teamed up with jockey Ryan Moore to win the Juvenile Fillies Turf with an engulfing performance by Mediate and the Juvenile Turf with a beautiful inside trip-late rally on Victoria Road.

Jockey Tyler Gaffalione won his first ever Breeders’ Cup race aboard Wonder Wheel, who reversed her running style for trainer Mark Casse and came with a sharp rally up the rail to win the Juvenile Fillies, and Irad Ortiz, Jr. gave Forte a perfect trip stalking a pressured pace to win the Juvenile.

It was more of the same on Saturday, and despite the fact that Kirt and Stretch picked 5/9 winners on their ASD Live Show, we couldn’t quite get close to a Pick 6 score. Goodnight Olive kicked off Saturday’s races with an expected win as the favourite in the Filly and Mare Sprint for trainer Chad Brown and jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr.

Longshot Caravel wired the field in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint for trainer Brad Cox and gave Tyler Gaffalione his second Breeders’ Cup win after heavy favourite Golden Pal broke slow and never reached contention. The angle? Caravel was 7/11 at the distance and one-for-one over the Keeneland Turf. The Dirt Mile was a doozy of a race with favourite Cody’s Wish just getting up to defeat Cyberknife by a head for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott and Junior Alvarado.

It was back to the Euro show for the first leg of Saturday’s Pick 6 in the Filly and Mare Turf, with overlooked Tuesday rallying strongly to give trainer Aidan O’Brien and jockey Ryan Moore their third win of Breeders’ Cup weekend at 4-1. Favoured Nashwa ground her way into fourth but was never going to win. And Canadian shipper Lady Speightspere added some life to the exotics with an excellent third-place finish at 31-1 for trainer Roger Attfield and jockey Luis Saez.

There was a bit of surprise in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint when heavy favourite Jackie’s Warrior failed to clear to the lead and lost his punch in the drive. Elite Power lived up to his name however and finished in workmanlike fashion to rally by the leaders and draw out late for trainer Bill Mott and jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. at a nice price of 5-1.

Modern Games was everyone’s choice in the Mile and didn’t disappoint as the favourite, giving trainer Charles Appleby and jockey William Buick their second Breeders’ Cup win of the weekend.

Malathaat won the most exciting finish of the weekend with a nose victory in the Distaff over 24-1 longshot Blue Stripe and 6-1 Clairiere for trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey John Velazquez, as favoured Nest failed to fire her best shot after an early move. The angle on Malathaat came from the DRF Clocker Reports that indicated she was working better than her stablemate Nest while in company with that one.

The “other” European showed up again in the Breeders’ Cup Turf when the less favoured of the two Charles Appleby runners, Rebel’s Romance, finished clearly best under James Doyle at 6-1 to win, while his favoured stablemate Nations Pride with William Buick finished a galloping fifth. Still, it was the third Breeders’ Cup winner of the weekend for Appleby, who did a fabulous job of preparing his runners.

And finally, Flightline proved he was truly a great horse in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, stalking the sharp speed horse Life Is Good through strong fractions before doing what he had done in every previous start, galloping by and drawing out to win by 8 ¼-lengths with something left. Is he as talented as Secretariat was? That’s an argument for the ages.

And a good one.
