April 2016
Message from the CEO
April is Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month; a time when communities come together to raise awareness of the impact, prevalence and factors that contribute toward child abuse. Child abuse is a complex problem that requires a local, state and national strategy to successfully shift the tide.
According to the 2016 Commission to Eliminate Child Abuse and Neglect Fatalities Report: Within Our Reach: A National Strategy to Eliminate Child Abuse and Neglect Fatalities, "every day, four to eight children in the United States die from abuse or neglect at the hands of their parents or caretakers. No one knows the exact number, and there has been little progress in preventing these tragic deaths. Most of the children who die are infants or toddlers." Additionally, according to the Florida Critical Incident Rapid Response Team Advisory Committee 2015 Report, "overall, child deaths in the State of Florida typically involve a child age 3 or younger and involve a variety of different manners of death, ranging from unsafe sleeping, drownings, natural causes, inflicted traumas, SIDS/SUID, and accidental trauma."

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month
Phebe Powell, Executive Director of Brevard C.A.R.E.S.; Commissioner Trudie Infantini; Carrie Thomas, Vice Chair of CAPTF; and Tracy Little,Wraparound Fidelity Coordinator at BFP.
The Brevard County Board of County Commissioners issued a proclamation to The Child Abuse Prevention Task Force (CAPTF) declaring April 2016 as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Brevard County.
To promote awareness, CAPTF will host several events and activities to spread a community-wide message that everyone can help prevent child abuse and neglect.
CAPTF of Brevard County has been working to raise awareness of child abuse and neglect in our community since 1996 and was developed to facilitate strategies within the community to prevent child abuse and neglect by impacting parents and their parenting practices.

Brevard C.A.R.E.S. Safety Management Services Team
CARES Brevard C.A.R.E.S. (Coordination, Advocacy, Resources, Education and Support) is a family-centered, strength-based, and community-driven model for child abuse prevention and family preservation. One of the programs offered by Brevard C.A.R.E.S. is the Safety Management Services Team.

Safety Management Services are crisis response services for children at risk of removal from parental care when the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) has identified present danger. Safety Management services are utilized to reduce entry into the foster care system by providing rapid response to families in need of intensive support.
Safety Management Services include an assessment of family needs and strengths, individual and family counseling services, education for parents on how to effectively manage stress and resolve conflict.
