Student Art Contest Winner
The winner of the State of Florida’s 2023 Black History Month Student Art Contest is Zaylan Hill, a 2nd Grade Student at Golfview Magnet Elementary School!
Zaylan submitted a painting for this year’s contest that he titled “The Highway Man," which aligned with the theme of the contest, "Celebrating the Achievements of African American Floridians."
His inspiration for the painting was his great-great uncle Robert Lewis, one of the 26 African American Landscape Artists commonly referred to as the Florida Highway Men. These skilled artists created over 200,000 paintings collectively from the 1950s to 1980s of Florida landscapes and natural treasures and challenged many of the racial and cultural barriers as African American Artists during that time.
Mr. Lewis was highlighted in the district-wide Black History Month communication for 2022 and hosted an exhibit at Suntree Elementary of the Highway Men’s work last year.
Zaylan's mother, Tinesha Neal, shared this message: “I am so happy and proud of him that he was chosen to meet the Governor & The First Lady. This experience was wonderful not only for Zaylan but also for me. As we left the Governor’s Mansion, Zaylan said he is ready to paint his next art piece. Thank you to everyone who took the time to Congratulate Zaylan. We are very honored & thankful.”
As one of four winners throughout the state, Zaylan received a $100 art supplies gift card, a plaque, and a one-year pass to Florida state parks. He and his family were also provided an all-expense paid trip to Tallahassee on February 22nd for receipt of the award at the Governor’s mansion. Zaylan and his family will be invited to the March 7th School Board Meeting to be recognized for his accomplishment.

On Wednesday, March 1, 5th-grade students from Port Malabar Elementary School toured STARBASE Academy on Patrick Space Force Base. STARBASE Academy is a Department of Defense-sponsored STEM Youth Program. The program offers an immersive 25-hour hands-on curriculum that aims to incite students’ interest in STEM.
The BPS District Office of Title I, Elementary Leading and Learning, has partnered with STARBASE Academy to offer this program to BPS 5th-grade students not visited by the UCF GeoBus. The Title I Department funds the transportation for students to experience five days filled with hands-on learning in science.
During the March 1st visit, Port Malabar students had the chance to operate a spherical drone that they were able to maneuver around a hand-built track of their own design. They also learned about how electricity interacts with circuits.

Secondary Science Fairs occurred throughout the District during the month of February. We have three science fairs for secondary students: Intracoastal, Mainland, and South regions.
As always, there were many talented students present, presenting on a wide variety of topics, from Robotics to Plant Sciences. Over 25 students were awarded scholarships from the Florida Institute of Technology (FIT). These scholarships typically range from $72,000 - $80,000.
Many of the first-place winners from the Fairs will go on to compete at the State Science Fair in Lakeland, FL, to be held April 4-6. Best-of-Show winners have already secured an all-expense paid trip to Dallas, TX for the International Science and Engineering Fair being held May 13-19.
Awards are given out in 13 total categories to the 1st through 5th place winners, and other special recognition awards are also bestowed on participants. To read the full lists of winners, see links below:

The Melbourne High School Band and Colorguard program will be hosting its first-ever winter guard competition tomorrow, Saturday, March 4th.
The Melbourne Invitational is a competition with the Florida Federation of Colorguards Circuit, featuring 29 winter guard teams from across Central/North Florida and South Georgia, including 10 teams from Brevard County: Bayside HS, Eau Gallie HS, Johnson MS, Melbourne JV, Melbourne Varsity, Merritt Island HS, Palm Bay Magnet HS, Rockledge HS, Space Coast Jr/Sr HS, and Viera HS.
