Smoking now banned in UK for anyone born after 2008
Boy, the British government isn't messing around. Not only are young people banned from buying cigarettes - common in many jurisdictions around the world - but a permanent ban on buying cigarettes for anyone born after 2008 is now in effect. For example, if you were born on January 1, 2008, and it's now January 1, 2046, and you're 38 years old, you won't legally be able to buy cigarettes.
Article excerpt: "Children aged 17 or younger will face a lifelong ban on buying cigarettes, as the Tobacco and Vapes Bill clears Parliament.
Both the Commons and Lords have settled on a final draft of the 'landmark' legislation that aims to stop anyone born after 1 January 2009 from taking up smoking by making it illegal for shops to sell them tobacco, to create a smoke-free generation.
When it gets royal assent, ministers will also have new powers to regulate tobacco, vaping and nicotine products, including their flavours and packaging.
It is part of a series of measures aimed at tackling the health effects of smoking, one of the UK's leading causes of preventable death, disability and ill health.
Vaping will be banned in cars carrying children, in playgrounds and outside schools and at hospitals, expanding smoke-free laws.
Vaping would still be allowed outside hospitals in a bid to support those trying to quit.
Outdoor hospitality venues like pub gardens and wider open spaces such as beaches and private outdoor spaces are not included in the plans.
People will also be able to continue smoking and vaping in their homes."
I expect many other jurisdictions to look at copying the UK on this as long as it's constitutional in their own countries.

Cricketgate? Is Canada in the midst of a major sport scandal?
According to a CBC Television The Fifth Estate report, the sport of cricket in Canada is being unduly influenced by a criminal gang out of India - the Bishnoi Group.
Article excerpt: "Also raising suspicion about the gang's influence: a red-flagged play during Canada's recent appearance at the men's T-20 Cricket World Cup that led to a Canadian player being interviewed by the International Cricket Council's Anti-Corruption Unit.
The allegations of threats and intimidation are emerging in British Columbia and, according to four sources who spoke to the fifth estate, involve individuals connected to Arvinder Khosa. He's head of Cricket B.C. and was elected in early April as president of Cricket Canada after a court-ordered vote on the organization's leadership.
The revelations emerged during a months-long fifth estate investigation into broader allegations of corruption, financial mismanagement and attempts to fix parts of matches by major figures at Cricket Canada, including the now former president, the former CEO and a board member.
'It's become... a place where corruption thrives,' said a high-placed Cricket Canada insider we're calling Graham, of Cricket Canada's leadership.
In a statement to the fifth estate, Cricket Canada said of allegations involving corruption and match-fixing that it "takes matters relating to integrity extremely seriously." It added that it supports a review by independent authorities including the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU), and conclusions should be based on findings rather than speculation."
I don't understand cricket and have never watched a game, but it's growing in popularity in Canada because of the large number of Indian immigrants. I would have never guessed the sport would incur these types of problems.

Saturday Night Live leaving Global and moving to CTV in Canada
Saturday Night Live has been simulcast on Global in Canada for years, but the iconic show - just about to finish its 51st season - is moving to CTV, according to a recent announcement.
Article excerpt: "Bell Media announced today that, following a deal with NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution, it will bring Saturday Night Live to Canadian audiences this fall, with its 52nd season airing in simulcast exclusively on CTV and streaming live on Crave.
'Crave and CTV are proud to be the new home of Saturday Night Live in Canada,' said Justin Stockman, VP, Global Content, Bell Media. 'A proven hit for over 50 years, the series has always been at the vanguard of pop culture, setting the tone for modern humour. We will be enjoying alongside viewers when the new season premieres on Crave and CTV.'
Beginning this Fall, new episodes of Saturday Night Live will also be available to stream on demand next day on Crave, and join Crave's Saturday Night Live Collection, a library of legendary SNL episodes from past seasons.
Crave also recently announced the acquisition of Saturday Night Live UK, the newly unveiled British adaptation of the late-night franchise, which debuted in Canada exclusively on Crave on Saturday, March 21."
It's nice to see that past episodes will be easily accessible on Crave. Also, if you haven't had the chance, check out SNL UK. I don't get some of the cultural references, but it's quite funny! The format is virtually similar to the original American version. I wonder if a Canadian version would work?

Trivia: Did you know?
Bonar Law was born in Rexton on Sept. 16, 1858, and is the only British Prime Minister not to be born in the British Isles. Despite winning a clear majority in the 1922 general election, he resigned shortly afterwards due to throat cancer. Bonar Law High School in Rexton, New Brunswick, is named in his honour.
