Dear Friends and Neighbors:
If you have driven down Briar Forest in the last week you would have seen a portion of the roadway surface from Riverview to Ashford Parkway that has been milled down. This stretch is part of my Fiscal Year 2022 selection for participation in the City’s Street Rehabilitation Program. Briar Forest is in desperate need of repair. While I am still fighting for a total reconstruction and much needed drainage improvements, the condition of the road’s surface can no longer be ignored. This stretch is just the first of many to come. I have marked the stretch west from Beltway 8 as the FY23 selection and I hope to continue from there.
Condition Before Re-Surfacing
Some of you might be frustrated by the present condition of this road, made even worse through the milling process, but when the work is completed, it will be substantially improved! The process starts with milling the surface layer of the roadway, then any areas that need additional work are marked for repair by the contractor before the final re-paving takes place. Currently, the crew is working on the base repairs to have a more leveled driving surface. The expected completion date is mid-February 2022. The number of areas that needed base repairs far exceeded original estimates, which accounts for the longer length of time on the project.

About The Program

The City’s Street Rehabilitation Program is designed to extend the life of Houston’s local streets and major thoroughfares based on our community’s needs and data. The initiative will work towards improving street surfaces, curbs, stormwater inlets, sidewalks, and accessibility ramps. The goal for the program is to improve 210 lane miles of streets each year. Street rehabilitation provides many of the same benefits of reconstruction, but at a much lower cost.
One of my favorite things about this program is that, in addition to the lane miles selected by the administration and public works, I, as District G Council Member, get to select a number of lane miles for local streets and major thoroughfares within District G each fiscal year for participation. Since I live out here and drive these roads every day and talk with constituents doing the same, I know which roads need the most help and I can place those roads in this program.
Many of you already send in street issues that can be addressed through this program without knowing it – and that helps to make my decision easier because there is no one better to help us make these selections thank the people who drive these streets daily.
