Ruth Aronsohn

We have to say farewell to our wonderful director Ruth Aronsohn who is moving on to manage the Bridge activities at another location. Ruth directed at both our Escondido and Oasis locations. We will miss her very personable and professional approach. Ruth was with us since 2015. Thank you and good luck.

Sharon Feingold is leaving the BCNC Board of Directors after 3 and a half years as Secretary. The BCNC thanks her for her service and wishes her the best.

Sue Linnett joins the BOD in 2026 and has accepted the Secretary position. Sue was recommended by Sharon. Thank you Sharon for your parting gift.

Paul Darin is back in January and February with two interesting topics for intermediate and advanced players.

ADVANCED CONVENTIONS

Saturday January 31

9:30 AM

Fee: $20

Learn essential conventions played by many experts in today's modern bridge world. Spiral, and Kokish Game Tries are two conventions that help us evaluate hands once we find a fit.

Paul will focus not only on how to play both conventions, but also why we play them. Creating a clear understanding on how to apply convention usage to hand evaluation.

 ADVANCED TREATMENTS

Saturday February 7

9:30 AM

Fee $20

Partnership Treatments are a very important part of defensive bidding over interference. Having a clear understanding on how to respond to interference over our Conventions (Stayman, Jacoby, and Two Clubs), allows us to use the interference against the opponents.

Unit 549 Sectional Tournament at Oasis

February 23, 24, and 25

A great change to garner those illusive silver points.

The Mixed Up Pairs on Tuesday November 11 was a huge success. A record 16.5 tables for this event. Players were treated to homemade Chile and Lasagna generously provide by chef Sue Lichter. Thank You Sue.

As advertised morning and afternoon players are paired. However there were a few more morning players than afternoon players which means morning players were paired with morning pairs. Doesn't see fair but guess what? For the first time in the seven year history of the event both the north-south and east-west winners were paired morning players. And even more interesting two of the players had less than 10 master points at the start of 2025.

Congratulations

Winners North/South Alessandro Lobbia & Daria Roth

Winners East/West Tom Branch & Mary Kay Boutilier

Open Game Partnership Requests

Please do not call the club for help finding a partner. If you need a partner for the Open Game, please submit a request using the Contact Us form on our website: bcncsandiego.org. Help is available to assist you given more than 24 hours notice. Director's simply don't have the time to fulfill last minute requests for partners.

The ACBL has 4 convention charts : the Basic Chart, Basic+ Chart, Open Chart, and Open+ Chart. BCNC uses the Open Chart for all games. You can view the charts using this link ACBL Convention Charts.

Conventions on the Open + Chart are not allowed in BCNC club games.

If you are not sure you can use a convention ask a director.

The ACBL requires that partnerships have completed filling in their convention cards and that both cards are identical.

Players may use the old or new convention card.

50 Years of Unit & Club History

Revision 3 January 2024

History

Sometimes things go wrong even in a zero tolerance club. It is best to call the director immediately. Most problems can be resolved at the table. Failing that, do you know the procedure for reporting it?

If it involves another player, see the director.

You can request the director to log it in the Club Incident Log. In some cases you may be requested to complete a Player Memo for disciplinary chair review.

It it involves the director, please report it to the Club Manager (Bill Sperry).

BCNC is affiliated with and supports Unit 549

Unit 549

Club (BCNC) VS Unit (549) - What's the difference?

Many players think they are the same thing.

Bridge clubs are not part of the ACBL. Bridge Clubs are independent business. Neither the ACBL or an ACBL Unit have any jurisdiction over a club.

A Unit is the smallest geographical part of the ACBL. ACBL has jurisdiction over units.

A club is associated with a unit simply because they are in the same geographical area.
