Greetings!

Last month I discussed the ways BCNC promotes bridge. Part of our mission is to also support local and ACBL national charities.

Local charities include the following:

a)  Elizabeth Hospice

b)  Escondido Humane Society

c)  Meals on Wheels

d)  Escondido Interfaith

e) Oasis

For every local charity game BCNC must have an ACBL charity game.

In 2025 BCNC donated a total of $7,637 to the local charities.

Also a special one time donation of $35,000 to Oasis was made.

So why bring this up? Well April is ACBL Charity Month.

Charity games in April include 14 sessions for local charities plus 14 sessions for ACBL National Charites. Refer to Special Events section for dates.

What goes up, comes down but not no so much in March. Oasis will be replacing the elevator in March. Players with mobility issues should park on upper level. Players who park in the upper lot and can navigate the the first floor stairs should park in the lower level. Think of it as the new BCNC health plan. Unfortunately Oasis has been unable to provide a start date but installation will take 4 - 6 weeks.

When the time comes your cooperation will be appreciated. When more information becomes available we will pass it on.

BridgeMates III

Tired of the BridgeMate II sticky keys? Our BridgeMates are over 10 years old.

BCNC has purchased the next-generation bridge scoring system completely redesigned with modern hardware and advanced software - the BridgeMate III. The BridgeMate III features a 7" full-color touchscreen The display is bright and clear, Colors are vivid, text is sharp, every detail stands out and is easier to use.

For example entering your player number was subject to error. Now if you don't remember your number you can enter your last name. That's just the start of using a device that is super user friendly.

A $1000 donation from Brian Castle toward new scoring machines was received in December. With his donation as an incentive, BCNC evaluated available options. BridgeMate III was determined to be the best choice. Twenty four units were purchased and installed in February.

Part of the mission of ACBL Units is to support bridge by educating and supporting the clubs in their area.

In February our Unit 549, SD North County Inland, approved a donation of $4,800 to BCNC toward the cost of the new BridgeMate III's.

Thank you Brian and Unit 549!

BCNC has been fortunate to have Paul Darin present 4 seminars for intermediate and advanced players. Paul is a Platinum Life Master and has been on the Barry Crane Top 550 list 2012 - 2025. Paul is a professional bridge player and teacher. Paul donated his time with all proceeds going to BCNC.

Thank You Paul!

BCNC began it's white ticket program on January 28, 2015.

As of February 23 2026 7,500 ticket sheets have been sold.

Bet you don't who bought ticket sheet number 001?

It was Don Mesner. It's OK , I didn't know either, but the club has a ticket log going back to 2015.

Open Game Partnership Requests

Please do not call the club for help finding a partner. If you need a partner for the Open Game, please submit a request using the Contact Us form on our website: bcncsandiego.org. Help is available to assist you given more than 24 hours notice. Director's simply don't have the time to fulfill last minute requests for partners.

The ACBL has 4 convention charts : the Basic Chart, Basic+ Chart, Open Chart, and Open+ Chart. BCNC uses the Open Chart for all games. You can view the charts using this link ACBL Convention Charts.

Conventions on the Open + Chart are not allowed in BCNC club games.

If you are not sure you can use a convention ask a director.

The ACBL requires that partnerships have completed filling in their convention cards and that both cards are identical.

Players may use the old or new convention card.

50 Years of Unit & Club History

Revision 3 January 2024

History

Sometimes things go wrong even in a zero tolerance club. It is best to call the director immediately. Most problems can be resolved at the table. Failing that, do you know the procedure for reporting it?

If it involves another player, see the director.

You can request the director to log it in the Club Incident Log. In some cases you may be requested to complete a Player Memo for disciplinary chair review.

It it involves the director, please report it to the Club Manager (Bill Sperry).

BCNC is affiliated with and supports Unit 549

Unit 549

Club (BCNC) VS Unit (549) - What's the difference?

Many players think they are the same thing.

Bridge clubs are not part of the ACBL. Bridge Clubs are independent business. Neither the ACBL or an ACBL Unit have any jurisdiction over a club.

A Unit is the smallest geographical part of the ACBL. ACBL has jurisdiction over units.

A club is associated with a unit simply because they are in the same geographical area.
