Tiny Students, Big Adventures:
Unveiling the Tot Lot!
| | Bridge Boston's new Tot Lot Playground is an investment: in the social-emotional growth + imagination of our youngest students, as well as in outdoor spaces for our community. | | |
Addressing the Needs
If you visited Bridge's “Tot Lot” last year, you might’ve mistaken it for a scene from Holes — a small, fenced in area with a few patches of grass and several hand-dug holes from students. While the “rugged” landscape sparked some imagination from curious students, it also posed safety risks and lacked structure. For many students—particularly in a city like Boston, where green space is scarce and unevenly distributed—this was their only daily access to the outdoors. Bridge acknowledged our student's needs for a more comprehensive, safe, and vibrant place to play.
Today, in our own backyard, lives a beautiful, colorful playground, full of joy and discovery.
Last fall, Bridge Boston unveiled our new Tot Lot, a dynamic new play area specifically designed to support the physical, social, and emotional development of our youngest scholars. Featuring a climbing structure, imaginative playhouse, garden, and newly added toys, this space now serves as an epicenter of creativity and connection for students in K1, K2, and 1st grade.

What’s Different Now?
The Tot Lot finished its construction just as the 2024-25 school year began, and it was unveiled to students in early October. “Recess has been completely transformed,” Karaline Smith, a K2 Lead Teacher said. “Kids are constantly climbing, pretending in the playhouse, and exploring the garden. You’ll see a restaurant operating one moment and a family of cats climbing the structure the next. On the sidewalk, there’s a soccer-ish game in full swing. There’s so much more movement, imagination, and collaboration.”

Why Does It Matter?
According to the City of Boston's 2021 Community Open Space & Recreation Plan, Roxbury—where many of our students live—has less than half the green space per resident compared to the city average. This “nature gap,” as it’s often called, disproportionately affects communities of color. At Bridge, where, according to the Department of Secondary and Elementary Education (DESE), 98% of students are children of color and 74% come from low-income households, providing equitable access to the outdoors is both a moral and educational imperative. We believe that our students deserve the same opportunities to develop communication, exploration, and problem-solving skills while at school, no matter where they live.

Recess isn't just a break. As Ms. Smith puts it, “Play is essential to children's development. It gives students a chance to run, explore, and play freely. With many kids spending time in front of screens, their time at Bridge is super valuable. We aim to promote inventive, active, and collaborative play as much as possible.” Research from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York also indicates that recess plays a vital role in child development. Their study shows that offering an outdoor break during the school day triggers numerous benefits including enhanced memory, attention, and concentration, improved classroom engagement and behavior, and fostering social and emotional skills such as sharing and negotiation. By providing dedicated outdoor play spaces, Bridge aims to address these critical aspects of child development – not just the academic growth of our scholars, but also supporting the whole child outside the classroom.
