March 2021 | March 30, 2021
On March 22, 2021, BTH celebrated the installation of the sewer and water lines to the Drayton Street shelter facility. For the hundreds of community members who have served thousands of meals without those conveniences, you know this is an important milestone!

We also held a ribbon-cutting ceremony – a most unusual event for a sewer – and announced the beginning of our capital campaign. The event was produced by SCVTV and was lived streamed on many community platforms. We welcome you to watch the
celebration, including an actual ribbon-cutting!
Funds from Los Angeles County’s Measure H, the quarter-cent sales tax for homelessness services, will be the major source of revenue to build this new campus. In addition, the City of Santa Clarita donated the land and will be providing additional funding.

We have also secured major donations from several businesses and our BTH Board of Directors has kicked off the campaign with personal gifts totaling $200,000.

We need to raise the last $2.5 million from the community before the County will
release funds to begin construction.
The City of Santa Clarita's Planning Commission approved the application for Bridge to Home’s construction on March 16, which means the shelter will now have a permanent facility to assist local individuals experiencing homelessness. The application, which was approved in a unanimous vote by the commission, enables Bridge to Home to operate an approximately 18,600-square-foot, 35-foot-tall, two-story permanent homeless shelter.

The site will accommodate up to 92 individuals, with up to 32 of those in eight attached single-family apartment-style units.

"This is a long time coming, and I congratulate the Bridge to Home folks for the perseverance and the service that they have provided,” Commissioner Tim Burkhart said.

Commission Chairman Dan Masnada congratulated the Bridge to Home staff and said the commission was proud and privileged to assist Bridge to Home’s effort to turn the permanent site from a vision into a reality.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, funding from federal, state, and county sources have expanded to address homelessness, especially for seniors and others at elevated risk of the virus. New incentives are available to both landlords and participants over the age of 55 to motivate landlords to participate and to allow case managers to negotiate barriers or rent.

BTH continues to help clients find permanent housing despite record-low housing availability. In fact, 179 households totaling 326 people have been permanently housed in the last 18 months.

In one instance, our client Mark and his case manager utilized the senior incentives in the housing process. Mark is 62 years old and has lived in Santa Clarita for five years. Mark has been homeless for three of those years, living in the riverbed, couch surfing from time to time, and temporarily staying in the Bridge to Home shelter. Mark has a few friends but does not have any family support.

Mark first came to Bridge to Home in 2019 and enrolled into the housing program but lost
contact with staff. He came back mid-2020 looking for permanent housing because he felt he just could not continue living outside. Mark was able to secure early retirement income in December 2020 and also now works part-time.

Mark and his case manager actively worked on his housing plan and Mark often used the BTH office for access to computers and phones for housing searches. Mark located a housing lead in Santa Clarita in December and the case manager was able to secure it.

We are thrilled to share that Mark moved into permanent housing in January 2021.
