Employee Profile: District 9 Studies and Plans Project Engineer Valerie Rolla

District 9 Studies and Plans Project Engineer Valerie Rolla is a 25-year IDOT veteran. Originally joining the team as a construction inspector, she later became a resident engineer before rotating into Studies and Plans as a designer. After that, Rolla became a squad leader and has been a project engineer in southern Illinois for the last five and a half years.

Bridge washing 101:

A high-pressured process

Bridge washing is a patient and coordinated process that uses highly pressurized water to clean the structure. Every part of the bridge - including the median, deck, parapet walls, expansion joints, rubber troughs and drains – is washed to adequately clear it from salt, abandoned bird nests, dirt, droppings and other debris.

Region 4, District 6: Patching and resurfacing on Illinois 123 is underway in Sangamon County. The work zone is from east of Athens to west of the Interstate 55 Williamsville interchange.

 

Lane closures are expected, and flaggers and cones will be used to direct traffic through the work zones. This $2.5 million project is expected to be complete by the end of August.

Region 5, District 8: A $2.2 million project is underway to construct a new roundabout at the intersection of Illinois 162 and Keebler Road in Maryville. Work is currently being done on the north side of Illinois 162. Once complete, the project will proceed in three stages:

 

Stage I: Keebler Road will close to all traffic and remain closed for the duration of the project.

 

Stage II and III: Illinois 162 will be reduced to one-way traffic, controlled by temporary traffic signals to maintain flow through the work zone.

 

The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Letting Update

 

June 13 is the next letting for statewide construction projects that are scheduled in 2025. Here are some dates to note in advance of the letting.


  • June 6 at 4:30 p.m. Joint venture cutoff (three contractor limit. Date for these groups who want to bid can do so).   
  • June 10 at 4:30 p.m. Request for authorization to bid cutoff (Final date for contractors who are authorized to bid on contracts). 
  • June 13 at noon Letting (Bids can be submitted until 11:59 a.m. on the day. Bids are shut down at noon).
