BAT 2022 Theme:

How Did We Get Here?

A big aspect of an art trail is about "the getting there". The extraordinary jumble of paradigm changing current events, combined with an annual event that marks another year in the art community, found us asking this question. "How Did We Get Here? "

Every year the BAT team decides on a relevant suggested theme that reflects the current zeitgeist and collaborates with those whose projects resonate and create a synergy. Read more about the exhibits and programs that explore the 2022 BAT theme of "getting here and re-invention", recognizing origins and adapting to a new place and conditions.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:

Sarah Beirne, Creator of the Crabby Cabaret

This week we are sitting down with the local performer, musical director and event coordinator about what inspired her to create the upcoming live performance and what community means to her!

Can you provide a brief bio and about yourself and your work as a performer/director?

I got my start back in high school where I attended Regional Center for the Arts High School in Bridgeport and had the opportunity to perform numerous plays and musicals, including one of my favorite roles as Dorothy in "The Wiz". During this time, I also attended an experimental artistic workshop called Original Works. From there I attended Five Towns College on Long Island, NY, majoring in Fine Arts and Vocal Performance.

I've been fortunate to perform locally around Connecticut which lead me to be hired as a musical director for multiple productions including "Songs for A New World" at the Black Box Theatre in Newtown and "Footloose" with the Nine Mile Players in Oxford. Currently, I serve as the Event Coordinator and Volunteer Screener for the Bridgeport Film Fest

What inspires you as a vocalist?

It may sound simple or straightforward, but performing! I love being on stage, the rush and excitement of singing my lungs out and having the audience respond joyously to it is what really motivates me to want to keep this an integral part of my life!

What inspired this idea for the Crabby Cabaret? And why was the time now to launch it?

I was in a similar project a few years ago, and I had so much fun - it was so different. We were able to connect with the audience in a more carefree and risque way, and I thought to myself, "I would love to bring this kind of project to my own hometown". It was probably my biggest goal when I moved back to Connecticut.

Why should people come out for the performance on Sunday, November 13? Are there highlights we should look forward to?

People should come because it's a free fun thing to do in our city and it's a chance to experience a live show that's not what you're typically used to seeing. It's taboo, it's campy, it's whimsical, it's a proverbial middle finger to societal norms. It's whatever you want it to be, and it's composed of people from the Greater Bridgeport area.

You will get a little pop, a little rock, a little musical theatre and lots of comedy! We even have a very special surprise guest we are announcing next week. And she is legendary!

In the spirit of the Crabby Cabaret and community theatre, what does “community” mean to you?

I feel that community is the mutual collective support of the city and people around you. It's the awareness that you have to put in what you want to see reflected back. But, it goes both ways. In order for the community to become more enriched, it has to have support from the people that live in it. It's a reciprocal relationship - and that's one of the main reasons I decided to do this project.

Anything else you'd like to share? And where can people find you on social media?

Support support support! Show up! Come see your fellow community members, and the untapped talent that could be possibly waving Hi to you from across the street.

You can find out more info and even request to join the crabby crew of performers on Facebook and Instagram, respectfully, @CrabbyCabCT.

Saturday, November 12; 1 pm to 9 pm / Sunday, November 13; 1 pm to 6 pm

In partnership with the Westport Museum for History and Culture. Considered among the largest movements of people in human history, “The Great Migration” took place between 1910 and 1970 when African Americans from the South moved to the Northern, Mid-Western and Western states, seeking liberty, personal security, and opportunity. This new exhibit features the photos, family memorabilia and personal stories of Black Bridgeporters who came to the city from the American South, adding to the cultural and economic diversity of the city.

From oddities, vintage trinkets and ghoulish garments, to handmade goods, you’re bound to find something for everyone on your list, naughty or nice from local vendors in an antique mall setting. Visit Ursa Galleries and Orphan Girl Studio inside the Arcade Mall Facebook event

Elements Opening Reception - Show & Sale

Dates of show: Friday, November 11 – Friday, December 2, 2022

The dictionary defines ELEMENT as a basic or essential part or aspect of something that cannot be broken down into a simpler form. It could be a basic shape such as circle, square or triangle in a piece of art, that when put together, creates something more complex. In chemistry, it is a group of substances that together make all things. Element can also mean a natural habitat or environment, weather or the one of the 4 elements of water, earth, air and fire, that constitute the universe.

For this show, we asked artists to submit entries inspired by their interpretation of Elements.

Light refreshments served.
