CCEP Approves Bridges Curriculum Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Usage Policy

The UCSF School of Medicine Curriculum Committee on Educational Policy (CCEP) approved a new policy that provides guidance for the ethical and secure use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools in undergraduate medical education.

The policy is based on the following principles.

To employ AI safely and effectively in medical education and practice, users must:

  1. Understand and adhere to UCSF and UC system-wide policies and expectations on AI use,
  2. Have sufficient proficiency in the subject area to verify the accuracy of the output,
  3. Understand and acknowledge potential biases and limitations of information produced by generative AI tools, and
  4. Follow processes for documentation and appropriate attribution of AI use.
Review the Bridges Curriculum Generative AI Usage Policy

We recently shared the 2024-2025 Medical Student Policies and Guidelines that the School of Medicine uses to oversee its operations. These policies help guide our education mission to graduate learners who will improve the health of our communities and alleviate the suffering of our patients.

Building Our Scholarly Community: The Teaching Scholars Program

The Teaching Scholars Program (TSP) is a yearlong program in health professions education and education scholarship accessible to faculty from all UCSF professional schools through a competitive application process. The Teaching Scholars program develops educational leaders and scholars through an intensive seminar series, mentored projects, a network of educational colleagues, and collaborative learning.

In September, the 2024 class of TSP graduates presented their scholarly work in education. The graduates' presentations highlighted unique educational research and showcased projects across all UCSF schools. In October, the TSP welcomed the Class of 2025. The graduates go on to enrich their learning environments with their new knowledge and have helped the incoming class of new scholars recognize that they are linked to a long UCSF tradition of valuing the role of educators and education scholarship to enhance learning.
