Students Return to Clinical Clerkships

Foundations 2 (clerkship) students return to the clinical environment this month. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, all F2 students were removed from the clinical environment in March 2020 and students entered newly designed extended mastery learning rotations (EMLRs) where they participated in clerkship didactics and studied for and took their clerkship exams.
Students will be returning to redesigned Thematic Clinical Block (TCB) rotations. Clerkships will be grouped into two TCBs: one procedurally focused (surgery, OB/Gyn, anesthesia), and the other non-procedurally focused (medicine, neurology, psychiatry, pediatrics). We are excited to welcome them back to the clinical environment as of July 13, 2020. A special thanks to
the
faculty, staff, and students who were part of the workgroup that designed the TCBs, led by Drs. Megan Richie and Sara Buckelew.

School of Medicine Declares Police Violence a Public Health Issue that Must be Stopped, Offers Anti-Racism Toolkit
In a
message distributed to students on July 2, 2020
, the School of Medicine acknowledged the pain, anger, and sadness the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Stephon Clark, and countless other Black men and women across this country, have caused.
"It is clear that structural racism and its manifestations in the form of police brutality, systemic economic and educational disadvantage, and health and health care disparities is a public health crisis. It intersects with and is as much of a pandemic as COVID-19.
Therefore, as we prepare to welcome a new class and continue to support our current extraordinary students, we are redesigning our educational programs to address these two epidemics, both of which are responsible for intolerable amounts of suffering and loss of life in our communities. Like all important change work, this will require a continuous improvement mindset and the concerted work of all of us. Within the coming month, we will announce curriculum changes to incorporate anti-Black racism into the four-year medical school curriculum."
Anti-Racism Toolkit and Teaching Consultations
The Differences Matter Education Group has written a
primer for faculty
to help them understand how to address issues of race in the curriculum using anti-racist strategies. They also offer individual consultations for faculty who wish to have their slides and cases reviewed through this lens.
