UCSF School of Medicine Graduation Honors the Achievements, Diversity, and Potential

of the Class of 2024

On May 19, the 173 graduates of the UCSF School of Medicine class of 2024 were joined by family, friends, and the UCSF community for a night of celebration at Davies Symphony Hall. It was an evening filled with reflection and optimism, honoring the achievements, diversity, and potential of this exceptional class.

UCSF School of Medicine Post Baccalaureate Program Celebrates 25th Anniversary

The UCSF School of Medicine Post Baccalaureate Program (PBP) was established in the summer of 1999 to increase the enrollment of underserved, underrepresented and low-income students in medical school.


Twenty-five years later, the program is an exceptional success: 325 students have completed the program, and ninety-six percent of its alumni matriculate into medical school, with seventy-eight percent returning to practice in California and sixty-three percent serving non-English speaking patients and communities.

Spring Inquiry Symposium: Class of 2024 Advances Knowledge Through Scientific Scholarship

On May 16, 2024, 127 fourth-year UCSF medical students showcased their Deep Explore and year-long research projects through oral and poster presentations during the spring Inquiry Symposium at Millberry Union on the UCSF Parnassus Heights campus. An array of student research topics were on display, ranging from clinical to basic science and medical education.

Policy Highlight

CCEP Approves CME Retroactive Credit Policy

The Committee on Curriculum and Educational Policy (CCEP) approved a new policy, the Continuing Medical Education (CME) Retroactive Credit Policy, which provides guidelines and procedures for obtaining continuing education credit at UCSF. The policy outlines specific deadlines for retroactive accreditation and credit request submissions for different types of educational activity.

Emeritus Professor Dr. Olle ten Cate Granted UCSF Presidential Chair Award for the 2024-2025 Academic Term

Olle ten Cate, PhD, Emeritus Professor, has been granted the prestigious position of UCSF Presidential Chair for the 2024-2025 academic term. The UCSF Presidential Chair Award is intended to encourage new or interdisciplinary program development or to enhance quality in existing academic programs of the University. Dr. ten Cate is a world-renowned expert in the realm of medical education, particularly noted for his transformative work on Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) - tasks or actions defined by clinical specialties, pertaining to what graduates of a particular program should be able to do unsupervised upon completion of the program. His project will be to develop UCSF as a center of expertise for EPAs. Learn more about Dr. ten Cate and the Presidential Chair Award.

Kyle Lakatos, MD, MPP, MSc, Class of 2024, Receives UCSF Chancellor's Public Service Award

Kyle Lakatos, MD, MPP, MSc, Class of 2024, was recently recognized with a UCSF Chancellor Award for Public Service for his work inspiring a cultural shift amongst his peers and colleagues, bringing Native American and Indigenous voices from across UCSF, and building partnerships with the local community to develop a summer camp for youth to learn about social justice, decolonization, and higher education.

What are the similarities and differences in surgical training in Nepal versus the United States? Chloe Sales (MS4), explores this question at the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology in Kathmandu, where expert physicians share their own training experiences from home and abroad.


In the second of three "Nepal Episodes," Chloe interviews Anu Manandhar, MBBS, MD, Head of the Tilganga Uveitis Department, about her training both in Nepal and at UCSF. Chloe also speaks with resident physicians Saksham Tamang, MD and Anu Amatya, MD about their journeys to ophthalmology, and how teaching and learning can create lasting change.
