The traditional white coat ceremony was held virtually this year, and featured keynote speaker Dr. George Rutherford, Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Daniel Cummins, MS2 Student writer, provided perspective on what it meant for the Class of 2024 to start their medical career in the middle of a pandemic.

Newly appointed deans Michelle Albert, MD, Associate Dean for Admissions and Peter Chin-Hong, MD, Associate Dean for Regional Campuses urge decisive attention to action against ethnicity-based inequities that undermine cardiovascular health in this journal article in Nature Reviews Cardiology. Social determinants of health in the African diaspora drive the lack of disease testing, increased prevalence of comorbid disease and reduced access to drugs, resulting in disproportionately higher COVID-19-related mortality among Black individuals than the rest of the population.

New Faculty Director, Student Assessment.
Christy Boscardin is Professor of Medicine and an Educational Researcher in the Center for Faculty Educators. In her new role, Christy leads continuous quality improvement efforts in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Assessment on all assessments in the Foundations 1 and Foundations 2 phases of the curriculum. She works in collaboration with Arianne Teherani, PhD, Director of Program Evaluation and Continuous Quality and Improvement.

New Education Director of Data and Analytics.
Polo joined UCSF as a business systems analyst in 2017 with several years experience in medical education at the New York University School of Medicine. Currently Polo is working on helping to bring about the next generation of analytics in medical education through:
- Conducting an inventory and integration of data systems
- Process creation across teams for efficient and scalable work
- Revamping institutional reporting to drive decision making.

On September 17, the Academy of Medical Educators inducted 28 new members and recognized the contributions of health professions education staff and "front-line" teachers and educators who impact our learners on a regular basis to make UCSF such an outstanding healthcare institution. Learn More.

Two faculty members have recently been appointed as medical student coaches. In this unique role they will provide longitudinal coaching. Each coach is assigned a group of about 6 first-year medical students to coach throughout their medical school curriculum. Coaches regularly review their students’ progress and competency development with them, and guide students in individual learning planning.

Foundations 1 Medical Student Shadowing Suspended at UCSF to Preserve PPE
At this time, medical student shadowing is not permitted at UCSF/UCSF affiliates in order to preserve PPE and limited space in team workrooms for physical distancing. The medical school is prioritizing all clinical space, patients, and PPE for students in the clinical years so that they can advance towards graduation on time.
