Bridges Curriculum Enters Year Two of COVID Response
|
|
|
|
As the Delta variant has driven a spike in COVID infections, the Bridges curriculum has had to adapt to this rapidly changing situation. To protect our students, in addition to our faculty and staff on whom our patients depend for care, our plan for Bridges for the Fall Quarter 2021 is as follows:
-
Large group lectures will be held remotely, either synchronously or asynchronously, per course leadership
-
Small group sessions (including CIC, CMC, Foundational Sciences, etc.) will be held in person
-
Anatomy lab will be held in person because of enhanced ventalitation
-
All indoor, in-person educational activities will require masking
-
Consuming food/drink will not be allowed for any indoor in-person educational activities
-
Clinical activities will continue as they have over the past year, following the guidance of the hosting clinical facility/institution

Medical Students Win UCOP Leadership Awards for Anti-Racism Efforts
Fourth-year medical students Laeesha Cornejo and Jazzmin Williams received the University of California President’s Awards for Outstanding Student Leadership at the July 2021 UC Regents meeting.
While in their busy medical school clerkship year Laeesha and Jazzmin became increasingly aware of racism witnessed and experienced by medical students and exacerbated during the COVID pandemic. They recognized that faculty remain unprepared to respond to learner feedback around racism. Despite a full clinical learning schedule, they developed a powerful workshop that they delivered to over 50 faculty in a short time to enhance preceptors’ ability to role model anti-racism behavior and embody a growth mindset when receiving feedback from learners and colleagues. With initial positive response by faculty to the student-led workshop, this year, the students, collaborating with faculty, are taking the lead to present the workshop to additional UCSF longitudinal clerkship programs and hope to scale the workshop and adapt it more broadly to medical school educators across the country.

Small Group Student Assessment Procedures Get Overhaul
Led by Marieke Kruidering, PhD, the Small Group Leader Assessment Education Continuous Quality Improvement (ECQI) Working Group embarked on an effort to develop procedures to improve the completion and quality of small group facilitator assessments of students. The group, which consisted of Foundations 1 faculty and staff, recommended early and frequent communication about assessment expectations, dedicated small group leader time to complete assessments, quality control of narrative feedback, and use of incentives to improve quality of small group leader assessment. F1 Operations Committee and the Assessment, Curriculum and Evaluation teams will work together to put these recommendations into action and ensure that students achieve the communication, teamwork and self-learning skills fundamental to small group learning and necessary for future practice.
