Historical Tidbit:

Vernon St. Graveyard in Titicut

This yard is the oldest in Bridgewater aside from the old graveyard near the Unitarian church. It is in the north corner of Cross and Vernon streets, it contains one-half acre, all enclosed with a common balance wall, having an entrance for carriages on Vernon street, and another on Cross street, with a driveway from one to the other, as seen on the plan, which encloses the old part of this burying-ground, which was first buried upon, and now has many unmarked graves, and is much grown over to low bushes and wild grass.

The oldest gravestone in this yard is that of Ezekiel, son of Jesse Leach (No. 38), died May 6, 1751, aged 7. The next oldest are Zebedee Leach, 1754, aged 5; William Hooper, 1755, aged 53; and Lois Hooper, 1756, aged 49. Only eight gravestones in the whole yard previous to 1800. In 1850, 155 graves could be distinctly seen and counted.

This ground being part of the old Samuel Alden farm, late Zephaniah Fobes [Zephaniah Fobes Azel or Hazael Alden, son of Josiah, and grandson of said Samuel] farm, was probably given by said Samuel Alden, who was a son of Dea. Joseph Alden, and lived north of Cross Street and east of this yard, and died in 1785, aged 80. It was formerly called the Alden graveyard in Titicut.

Climate Can-Do: Thrifting a Healthier Planet

Fast fashion may be easy and cheap, but did you know that in the United States, nearly 13 million tons of clothing end up in the landfill each year? Understanding the environmental impact of purchasing choices has us looking for solutions.

Benefits of Thrifting

  1. By donating and purchasing second-hand clothes, you are helping reduce the amount of textiles that end up in landfills. With more and more clothes being made out of synthetic materials, textiles are taking hundreds of years to decompose. Buying second-hand doesn’t just extend the life cycle of clothes, but also prevents toxic materials from entering our ecosystems.
  2. Thrifting helps reduce wasted resources. Clothing production requires thousands of gallons of water. For example, a single pair of jeans uses about 1,800 gallons of water in its production process.
  3. If the sustainable benefits weren’t enough, thrifting also saves money. Second-hand stores sell their donations at a discounted price. You can find vintage, good-quality clothes for less. There’s also a large variety to choose from, and maybe you’ll find your new signature piece!

Alternatives to Thrifting

If buying second-hand isn’t for you, please do your part in keeping clothes out of landfills.

  1. Donate your used clothes: homeless shelters and youth homes, as well as thrift stores, get your clothes to individuals who need them most.
  2. Repurposing your clothes is a good way of being a conscious consumer, but it can also be a fun craft and a money saver. For example, cut up old tee T-shirts and use them as cleaning rags, or consider embroidering an old tank top and giving it a new life.
  3. Learning how to repair clothes also extends their life cycle. Darning socks, sewing a rip, or mending holes helps your favorite pieces stay in your closet instead of a dump.

Leading a thrifty lifestyle helps reduce waste, but it can also be a fun way of rediscovering new styles or old clothes you forgot about.

Purchasing Power

“This life is yours. Take the power to choose what you want to do and do it well. Take the power to love what you want in life and love it honestly. Take the power to walk in the forest and be a part of nature. Take the power to control your own life. No one else can do it for you.”

~ Susan Polis Schutz
