Hike for Humanity: Frances Jeffries Completes 84 Miles for Nuclear Abolition
Bridgewater's Frances Jeffries has successfully completed an 84-mile hike, in her 84th year, on the Appalachian Trail as part of the ICAN Week of Action. Hiking in sections through the scenic, less challenging, parts of the trail in Western Massachusetts and Connecticut, Frances took on this journey to raise awareness and funds in support of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). The hike, which she completed in sections, started on August 19, 2024, and concluded on September 16, 2024, symbolizes her commitment to a world free of nuclear weapons.
Along her journey, Frances encountered numerous supporters who were moved by her mission. From fellow hikers she received donations directly from those she met along the trail. Now, with $4,200 left to reach her goal of $8,400, Frances asks for the community’s continued support in to take steps toward nuclear disarmament.
Donations will benefit 3 organizations: NuclearBan.US, Greater Boston Physicians for Social Responsibility, and GRIP (Gender and Radiation Impact Project). Contributions can be made through the donation page, where funds will support vital efforts to eliminate the threat of nuclear weapons. Your contribution can help make the world safer. Let’s support her final push and achieve this important goal together.

Historical Tidbit:
Apple Picking Time
| |
When the calendar reaches September we here in New England begin to make ready for fall. A must do this time of year is goin apple pickn'!
Apples have spanned history for thousands of years, Greeks and Romans were growing apples in the 300's BC. Chard remains of apples were even found at a stone age village in Switzerland.
The trees we have here were mostly introduced by seed from the first Europeans. Apple trees loved our soil and have been here ever since. Massachusetts Bay Colony records show apples were grown here as early as 1630. American folklore tells of John Chapman, commonly known as "Johnny Appleseed." Johnny distributed apple seeds and trees as he made his way from Massachusetts to the Ohio River Valley being a missionary in the early 1800's.
In 1796 John McIntosh from Ontario Canada developed the most popular of apples. Excellent flavor, juiciness and aroma have made it the favorite of apple breeders. They're the parent apple for many other types such as Cortland, Empire, Macoun, RubyMac, Jonamac among others. There are over 200 types of apples grown in New England.
Besides apples mouthwatering taste they rank #1 in antioxidants compared to 40 other commercially available fruits and vegetables. One half cup has only 42 calories, they contain no cholesterol, no sodium, and no fat. They're high in fiber, packed with vitamins A, B, C and high in potassium. So raise your glass of cider and feast the fall away on apple pie, apple cobbler, apple pan-dowdy, apple streusel and all your other favorite apple recipes.
~Respectfully submitted, Robert Lundquist
