| | Peace in Bridgewater and Beyond Returns for Sixth Annual Celebration | | |
Bridgewater's Peace in Bridgewater and Beyond held its sixth annual celebration in September, bringing local civic organizations, churches, community groups, and residents together for a week of activities centered on peace and community connection.
The 2026 celebration featured free events throughout Bridgewater under the theme “Invest in Peace For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day.”
The tradition grew from a question asked by a Rotary Peace Fellow and member of the Rotary Club of the Bridgewaters about why Bridgewater could not become an International City of Peace. That question helped lead to a local consortium of civic groups and churches that comes together each year to plan activities for residents, families, and children.
This year's program included Peace Pole rededications, mindfulness workshops, Peace Crane making, children's programming, music, worship services, and other community gatherings. On Monday, September 21, the community joined the Global Peace Wave with a moment of silence as part of the International Day of Peace.
The Rotary Club of the Bridgewaters also shared photos from an inner peace, mindfulness, and loving-kindness workshop at the Bridgewater Public Library featuring local Buddhist monks and nuns. The workshop was part of the day's International Day of Peace programming.
| Later in the week, participants gathered for Pattern and Ritual: The Enchantment of Puppets and Puppeteering at Bridgewater State University on Thursday, September 24. A sing-along songfest led by Dr. Sarah Macquarrie had been scheduled for Friday, September 25, but was cancelled due to the approaching storm. | | |
Organizers also announced that participation in Autumnfest and the Chalk Art Festival on Saturday, September 26, was cancelled, along with other planned events for Friday and Saturday. Online events focused on the elimination of nuclear weapons were planned for September 26.
The celebration concluded with Peace Sunday at Central Square Congregational Church on Sunday, September 27. The church offered worship at 10 a.m. both in person and online, with a children's church program also available.
The Rotary Club of the Bridgewaters supported the tradition alongside community partners, including Bridgewater Communities for Civil Rights, Bridgewater Public Library, First Parish Unitarian Universalist, Bridgewater United Methodist Church, Central Square Congregational Church, Bridgewater State University organizations, Social Justice Choir, Cedar Street Community Center, and the Bridgewater International City of Peace Working Group.

The History of Trinity Parish's Construction
The first Trinity Parish Episcopal Church was organized as early as 1748. It was located on Main Street, north of High Street, on part of 14 acres donated by Samuel Edson of Bridgewater in 1747. The church and graveyard occupied part of the property, and members of the Edson family were among the church's builders. Occasional services were held there from 1748 to 1801, but active worship ceased during the early 1800s. The church was renovated in 1816.
By 1836, a second church had been erected on the upper Main Street site in the Gothic Revival style. The church was described as ranking "among the finest buildings of that day with its mahogany pulpit."
The present Trinity Parish Episcopal Church, located at Main and Pearl Streets, was built in 1883 and consecrated in 1884. Designed by prominent Worcester architect Stephen C. Earle and built by contractor S. L. Ryder, the church is a picturesque example of the Stick Style adapted for ecclesiastical use, with Gothic Revival elements. The present church incorporated materials from the second structure, including its cornerstone, granite foundations, bell, altar table, and much of its lumber.
Earle specialized Gothic architecture, and also designed Worcester's Free Public Library and Worcester Art Museum.

Get creative and give yesterday's dinner a lunchtime makeover by adding leftover vegetables to today's wrap or salad, or combining leftover chicken, rice, and vegetables to create a filling bowl. Using what you already have can help reduce food waste, save money, and make lunch a little more fun. For more ideas on preventing food waste at home, visit the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

This year, there will be nine binding statewide ballot questions, the most that Massachusetts voters have ever been asked to consider. This official 2026 Information for Voters book contains information on all nine questions, including a summary of each proposal, the full text of the proposed/existing law, statements describing the effect of a yes or no vote, and brief arguments for and against each question.
The information in this book will assist you in making a thoughtful decision before you vote. With a longer ballot than usual, you may want to take notes and bring this book with you when you go to the polls.
The choices you make in this election will shape the course of government for our state, as well as local communities. I urge you to participate in this process, because your vote matters.
Very truly yours,
William Francis Galvin
Secretary of the Commonwealth

Bridgewater Community Comes Together to Commemorate
25th Anniversary of September 11
| | |
On Friday, September 11, the Bridgewater community gathered at the Bridgewater Fire Department Headquarters to commemorate the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, and honor those who lost their lives, the survivors, and the first responders who answered the call that day.
Hosted by Bridgewater Veterans' Service Officer Gregory Martin, the ceremony brought together members of the Bridgewater Fire Department and Police Department, local veterans, town officials, clergy, and community members. The morning included the posting of the colors, the national anthem, an invocation, remarks from local leaders, a wreath-laying ceremony, a moment of silence, and musical tributes.
Fire Chief John Schlatz reflected on the responsibility to keep the stories of September 11 alive for generations who did not experience the day themselves.
“We must continue telling those stories. Not to preserve the fear, but to preserve gratitude. Not to relive the hatred, but to remember the courage.”
Town Council President Dr. Paul Murphy brought that message back to the community, noting that the spirit of service remembered on September 11 continues through the people who serve Bridgewater today.
| | |
“The spirit of service we witnessed on September 11th did not begin or end that day. It exists in communities like ours every single day.”
The ceremony concluded with a police and firefighter tribute, wreath laying, a gun salute, Taps, Amazing Grace on bagpipes, a moment of silence, and the retiring of the nation's colors.
Twenty-five years after September 11, Bridgewater's gathering offered an opportunity not only to remember the past, but to recognize the community, service, and courage that continue today.
