Community Brief from Bridgewater Middle School
Monday, March 13, 2017

PRIN. JAMES 2016
This is only a four-day week for the students as we are concluding the third quarter on Thursday, March 16. There is no school on Friday, March 16. The following week the entire campus will be closed for spring break with classes resuming on Monday, March 27.

We want our Bobcats to receive the highest grades possible this quarter, so I encourage all of our students to go online and check  ProgressBook to make sure that all assignments are brought current as soon as possible. We will be entering the bulk of this year's state testing soon after spring break and we want the students to have the grades they deserve prior to sitting for the FLDOE assessments.

I hope you enjoy this week's quick look at recent events from around the campus. Have a wonderful week!

Principal

Good Afternoon Principal Floyd, *

Just wanted to send out a special thanks to the West Orange High School NJHS members for helping the Bridgewater Middle School NJHS members this morning with the school beautification project.

This is community service at its best. These kids shows what great leaders and community members they'll become in the years to come. Just wanted you to know that I am sending out to them a special thank you for sacrificing part of their weekend!

Also, wanted to thank Ms. Shalanda Cooper for taking the time out for organizing this and all of the other events. According to Raymond, Bridgewater Middle NJHS did a great job at Bay Lakes Elementary last night!

Thanks Mrs. Cooper and all of the kids from West Orange High School and Bridgewater NJHS!

Sincerely,

Rakesh Singh

Lunch with the principal for some special Bobcats . . .

Several Bobcats were randomly selected to have lunch with the principal. These students were identified by their good grades, fine attendance or for being kind to someone on campus. They provided great suggestions on how we can make Bridgewater an even higher place of excellence!

Naviance College and Career Online Planning Tool

Orange County Public Schools is providing Naviance - Family Connection for all district students in grades 6-12 to help with college and career planning!

Starting February 28, 2017, students can access the Naviance College and Career Program from their Launchpad site. From the Home Page, students can navigate through four tabs - Colleges, Careers, About Me and My Planner to access information such as:
  • Researching careers, colleges, and majors
  • Finding local and national scholarships and enrichment programs
  • Exploring students' career interests, learning styles, personality types, and multiple intelligences
  • Building resumes and holistic portfolios for job and college applications
  • Setting goals and developing personalized plans for success
  • Requesting and sending electronic transcripts
  • Learning about success skills, financial planning, self-discovery, and building support network
School counselors will be working with students for the remainder of the school year on tasks related to their specific grade level. These tasks can be found by clicking on the "My Planner" tab and then clicking on "Tasks assigned to me."  Counselors will be helping students complete these tasks in various ways in the coming months. Students can also explore the site on their own.

The information the students create in Naviance will follow them throughout their high school career and they will be able to build upon research and activities they complete each year.

* Parents will receive login information in August for Naviance in order to view their child's progress through the college and career selection process.

Monday's Motivational Moment

BIRDS OF A FEATHER
For years, Monterey, California, was a pelican's paradise. The town was the site of many fish canneries. In fact, it was the home of Cannery Row, a street popularized by Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck in his novel of that name.

Pelicans loved the town because fishermen cleaned their catch, discarding the offal, and the pelicans would feast on those scraps. In Monterey, any pelican could be well fed without having to work for a meal.

But as time went by, the fish along the California coast were depleted, and one by one, the canneries all shut down. That's when the pelicans got into trouble. You see, pelicans are naturally great fishers. They fly in groups over the waves of the sea, and when they find fish, they dive into the water and swoop up their catch. But these pelicans hadn't fished in years. They had grown fat and lazy. And now that their easy meals were gone, they were actually starving.

Environmentalists from the area wracked their brains to figure out a way to help the pelicans, and finally they came up with a solution. They imported pelicans from another area, ones that were used to foraging every day, and they mixed them in with the local birds. The newcomers immediately started fishing for their own food, and it wasn't long before the starving native birds joined them and started fishing for themselves again.

The point? If you ever find yourself starving for success, one of the best ways to get things going in your life is to be around people who are achieving success. Spend time with them. Watch how they work and spend their time. Learn how they think. You will inevitably become like the people you are around .

ENJOY YOUR WEEK!
