Bridging Continents and Empowering Communities through Leadership in Global Development: Meet Sarah McCarthy, CEO of Global Livingston Institute
In honor of Women's History Month we are proud to feature Sarah McCarthy, CEO of the Global Livingston Institute (GLI).
Global Livingston Institute is a proud partner of GlobalMindED. Sarah McCarthy will be speaking at the GlobalMindED conference in Denver, June 16-18.
What is your personal and professional journey?
With a career spanning four continents and a deep-rooted commitment to social responsibility, I’ve spent the last two decades working to create sustainable impact in international development.
My journey has been shaped by firsthand experiences in Africa, particularly my time living in Rwanda, where I sought to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities within local communities. Throughout my career, I have led the development of high-impact philanthropic foundations at institutions such as the Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe, Bank of Kigali, and Crystal Ventures Rwanda, focusing on education, health, and economic empowerment.
I also had the opportunity to spearhead fundraising and international partnerships at Project C.U.R.E., where I worked closely with diplomatic leaders and grassroots changemakers to enhance global healthcare access. These experiences reinforced my passion for bridging resources with real-world needs, shaping my people-first leadership style and global perspective.
What are the most valuable lessons you've learned about yourself through your life and career?
Through my work, I have learned that true impact comes from deep listening, thoughtful collaboration, and sustainable strategies. I strongly believe in the power of mentorship, education, and local leadership to drive meaningful change. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that lasting solutions come from empowering communities rather than imposing external ideas.
What drives your desire to contribute and make a difference?
My driving force? A desire to connect people and resources in ways that create long-term transformation—whether that’s supporting students through GLI’s immersive global classroom experiences or helping institutions build strong philanthropic initiatives that leave a lasting legacy.
If you could go back and advise your younger self, what would it be?
If I could go back and advise my younger self, I would say: “Be bold. Trust your instincts. Seek out experiences that push you beyond your comfort zone—because that’s where real growth happens.”
