A Word From Mark

Dear Friends,

January has been an incredible and impactful month for Radiant Futures! Together, we brought much-needed attention to the critical issue of human trafficking as part of Human Trafficking Awareness Month. From the energetic Hip Hope Cardio Night at the Mix Academy to meaningful outreach efforts across Orange County, our team gave their all to raise awareness and inspire action. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us in these efforts—we couldn’t do this without your support.

As we wrap up January, we’re thrilled to invite you to our Fair Trade Pop-Up at the Fullerton Campus on January 30th from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. This free event features seven wonderful local vendors, live music, and a chance to connect with the community while supporting fair trade initiatives. We hope to see you there for an evening of fun and connection!

We’re also celebrating the outstanding success of our Dynamic Duo 5K Walk/Run. With more than 300 participants, this event was a powerful reminder of the strength and generosity of our community. To every walker, sponsor, and volunteer—you are the heart of our mission. Your unwavering support fuels the important work we do every day, and we are so grateful for you.

February shifts our focus to Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, a time to reflect on the role we all play in fostering healthy relationships and empowering teens to recognize and prevent abuse. Over the years, Love Is Giving Day has been a meaningful opportunity for Radiant Futures and our partners to come together in support of survivors. We’re thrilled to share that this year’s Love Is Giving Day has been rescheduled to May 21st. This special day is a chance to unite as a community and highlight the transformative power of collective giving. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for more details on how you can make a lasting impact in the lives of those we serve.

Thank you for being an essential part of the Radiant Futures family. Together, we’re not just empowering individuals and rebuilding lives, we’re shaping a future free from violence.

With appreciation,

Mark

From Shadows to Light: Esperanza’s Journey

When Esperanza first walked into Radiant Futures, she carried the weight of a lifetime of pain. A survivor of childhood sexual abuse, teen dating violence, domestic violence as young adult, and relentless emotional manipulation by loved ones, she sought help as a last resort after years of feeling trapped and invisible. Little did she know her journey toward healing was about to begin.

Esperanza connected with Radiant Futures through a referral from the Downtown Family Resource Center, which lead her to enroll in the Personal Empowerment Program (PEP), a 10-week class designed to help survivors reclaim their sense of self. Initially quiet and reserved, she observed the group carefully, unsure if it was safe to share her story. By the third session, she opened, finding comfort in a room full of individuals who truly understood her experiences.

A turning point came when Esperanza was connected to legal services, which provided her with resources to take action. Learning about her rights as a survivor was life changing. For years, she endured emotional abuse and harassment from her ex-husband, the father of her 11-year-old daughter, even though they had been separated for a decade. With support, Esperanza pursued a restraining order and initiated the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) process.

Bridging the Gap: How to Support Teens Who Experience Teen Dating Violence

Teen dating violence (TDV) is a pressing issue impacting countless young people across the United States. Nationally, nearly one in three teens experience some form of abuse—whether physical, emotional, or sexual—within their dating relationships (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021). In California, approximately 20% of teens report experiencing physical or sexual violence by a dating partner (California Department of Public Health, 2021), with Orange County reflecting similarly alarming trends. These statistics highlight the urgency of addressing TDV and offering meaningful support to affected teens.

Recognizing Teen Dating Violence

Teen dating violence often goes unnoticed, as many teens feel too ashamed or confused to seek help. Adults must be vigilant for warning signs, including behavioral changes like withdrawal from friends, drops in academic performance, or loss of interest in hobbies. Emotional distress, such as depression, anxiety, or irritability, can also be a red flag. Physical signs, like unexplained bruises, and possessive partner behaviors—such as controlling social interactions or phone use—may indicate abuse. Frequent, demanding communication, including constant check-ins or a high volume of calls and texts, can signal unhealthy dynamics.
