On Wednesday, August 12th, Kolaj Institute invites you to Collage the Tarot, with visual artist Bethanie Mangigian @glu_grlie. Participants will explore the rich imagery of the tarot through intuitive collage-making. The session invites participants to pull a card (bring a deck or use one of ours), reflect on its meaning, and set a personal intention. From there, participants will create an original collage inspired by the symbols, themes, and messages that arise. This is a space to slow down, connect with inner wisdom, play, and express creativity. No experience with tarot or collage is needed, and participants are invited to bring a notebook if they'd like to journal as part of this practice All materials are provided, and gentle guidance is offered throughout. at Foam Brewers, Burlington, Vermont, USA through 31 August 2026.“Borrowed Instincts / Salvaged Selves” is a collection of hand-cut collages by Burlington, Vermont artist Nikki Laxar, created from original mono-printed papers and repurposed imagery. The work explores the intersection of human, animal, and landscape through hybrid forms that blur the boundaries between instinct, identity, and transformation. Celestial skies and the natural world become layered narratives of connection, memory, and belonging. MORE

Early Deadline to apply: Sunday, 16 August 2026. A four-week, virtual/online residency with Kolaj Institute in September and October 2026.
In this residency, collage artists will explore the history and contemporary rise of authoritarianism and consider how art can resist it. Using The Authoritarian Regime Survival Guide as a starting point, artists will examine how authoritarian systems operate and develop strategies for making work that contributes to civic discourse. Accepted artists will receive a copy of the book by mail. Through readings, discussions, presentations, and weekly collage-making, participants will create work responding to authoritarianism or resistance, receive critical feedback, and develop statements contextualizing their artwork. Kolaj Institute’s solo residencies in New Orleans are designed to provide artists, curators, and writers with dedicated time and space to work on a project. We are open to your ideas. We are looking for artists with an articulated goal for their time in New Orleans. That goal need not to be explicitly related to New Orleans, though priority will be given to those artists whose projects need time in New Orleans. These Solo Residencies are taking place at Kolaj Institute’s home in the New Orleans Healing Center and help further Kolaj Institute's mission to support artists, curators, and writers who seek to study, document, and disseminate ideas that deepen our understanding of collage as a medium, a genre, a community, and a 21st century movement. Toronto, Ontario, USA. In her work, Elif Giray experiments with ideas, colour and texture. She cuts and composes mostly small to medium sized collages using a combination of abandoned vintage photographs, old handwritten letters, decorative and handmade papers, everyday artifacts, watercolour and acrylic paint. Her abstract paintings combine colours, molding medium and palette knife strokes. Each discipline allows her to tackle similar themes but from a different lens; her collages allow me to explore in an up close and more concrete way and her paintings allow for more distance and abstraction, bridging the micro and macro. COLLAGE BOOKS
This book by MJ Connors Davison is a compilation of five years orchestrating an annual project based on the Surrealists’ game of “Exquisite Corpse”. In it, forty-one “bodies” are each composed of four sections: head, upper torso and arms, lower torso and upper legs, lower legs and feet. Each section was assigned to an artist or artists working in tandem. All created their collages in secrecy, building disparate parts toward whole bodies. The project started in 2021 when she responded to Kolaj Magazine‘s call for regional projects to honor World Collage Day, held the second Saturday of May. MJ offered this cooperative game to artists around Portland, Oregon as a gesture towards healing the sense of isolation many were feeling due to the COVID epidemic. “Corpse” was changed to “Community” to emphasize the project’s collaborative vitality. Writing about collage presents unique challenges. In this workshop, participants will develop practical techniques for writing about their artwork through presentations, discussions, readings, and sharing works in progress. Topics include artist statements, biographies, proposals, reviews, object descriptions, storytelling, and alternative forms such as poetry, personal essay, and found text. The workshop is led by Kolaj Magazine Editor Ric Kasini Kadour. Guest speaker Danielle Krysa, collage artist and author of seven books, will share her experience writing about art. Participants will leave with a revitalized artist statement and biography, as well as strategies for using art writing to support their professional goals. LEARN MORE

Folklore Collage Society is a printed journal dedicated to artwork and artists who activate, transmit, and celebrate folklore as a form of cultural expression and a strategy for community resilience. Authoritarian Regime Survival Guide
Authoritarian Regime Survival Guide is a collage. The book combines the text of a Polish human rights activist Martin Mycielski with the artwork of seven collage artists to create a space in which we can think about the rise of authoritarianism and how to navigate the troubling, difficult times in which we find ourselves. Organized as a series of lists, the book illustrates what to expect under authoritarianism and offers rules for surviving authoritarian regimes and engaging their supporters. The introduction traces how the text came into existence and how the artists came together to make collage about it. Ric Kasini Kadour shares historical examples of artists responding to authoritarianism; John Heartfield’s anti-fascist collage and a 1979 exhibition in East Germany that was described as a “victory over false consciousness.” Authoritarian Regime Survival Guide is a testament to the role art can play in our communities.

NEW PUBLICATION
This project led by Cape Girardeau, Missouri, USA-based artist Emily Denlinger speaks to the role of art, ritual, and resilience. Building on her own work, Denlinger engaged with thirty-nine artists at the 2025 edition of Kolaj Fest New Orleans to make locative collage photographs in an artist-created landscape inspired by global masking traditions. The resulting artworks are presented in this zine published by Kolaj Institute. "The project functions as 21st century folklore with each character potentially representing a magical creature or masked performer in some yet-to-be-imagined ritual," wrote Kolaj Institute Director Ric Kasini Kadour. "Like the odd, creature-like figures of early 20th century Surrealists, they, too, are a response to deeply troubled times and offer us the opportunity to find a collective effervescence to see us through them."
