Five years ago, a major infrastructure tunnel in Phoenix underwent a lighting transformation that continues to pay dividends today. The project — featuring 3,500 GE TunnelGuard® fixtures upgraded with LED technology from HiLumz USA — set a new benchmark for what smart retrofit solutions can accomplish.

The numbers speak for themselves:

  • The Scale: 3,500 GE TunnelGuard® fixtures retrofitted.
  • The Speed: An average of just 3 minutes per installation, dramatically reducing labor time and disruption.
  • The ROI: Over $2 million saved within the first 36 months.
  • The Result: More than five years of consistent, high-performance operation with reduced maintenance and improved efficiency.

By upgrading within the existing infrastructure rather than starting from scratch, this project highlights the true power of retrofit: maximizing what’s already in place while significantly lowering energy consumption and operational costs.

Representing HiLumz, we’re proud to bring these kinds of high-performance retrofit solutions to our clients. Designed for speed, engineered for longevity, and built to deliver measurable ROI, retrofit isn’t just an alternative to replacement — it’s often the smarter path forward.

Great lighting doesn’t always require tearing everything out. Sometimes, the biggest impact comes from reimagining what’s already there.

One of the newest smart, high-impact retrofit solutions to hit the market, the Hi-Lumz Trove Light is designed to upgrade 300–500W Quartz and PAR 46/56/64 sources in theatrical and sanctuary downlights to today’s advanced LED technology.

Built for 8", 10", and 12" cans and cylinders in 20’+ ceilings, Trove delivers high-lumen output with narrowing optics—making it an ideal solution for churches, theaters, auditoriums, mezzanines, convention centers, and schools that need powerful, precise illumination from above.

With multiple mounting options to replace PAR54, PAR64, and 250–500W E11 or E26 halogen and quartz lamps, modernization is seamless and efficient. Dimming compatibility is successful in most applications, and for added confidence, Hi-Lumz offers a trial program for testing.

For spaces with outdated or no dimming systems, Trove can be configured with wireless wall controls, app-based control, and timed or circadian dimming—specified and supported by Hi-Lumz in partnership with Casambi Bluetooth Mesh. It’s a forward-thinking retrofit that makes upgrading high ceilings both simple and smart.

Looking for a sustainable spec strategy that also makes financial sense? Becky’s go-to answer: retrofit solutions.

With over 24 of our manufacturers offering some form of LED retrofit, there are more options than ever to upgrade lighting without starting from scratch. LED retrofit solutions are a cost-efficient way to reduce energy consumption, lower maintenance costs, and minimize landfill waste—all while improving overall lighting performance.

“Retrofits are one of the easiest ways to make a real sustainability impact without a full replacement,” Becky shares.

For exterior applications like parking lots and bollards, many larger manufacturers offer retrofit kits designed to mount directly into existing housings. These solutions are engineered for long operational life and are backed by the manufacturer’s warranty—making them especially valuable for expansion projects where new phases need to match existing luminaires.

For more decorative or custom housings, we also work with manufacturers who specialize in custom light engines built specifically for retrofit applications. These factory-designed solutions are tailored to field conditions, ensuring the correct light output and performance for the space—often exceeding the lifespan of simple lamp replacements.

And when a project calls for LED lamps? We’ve got those too—from dimmable T8s to GU5.3 bases and more—ideal for budget-sensitive upgrades.

Of course, no retrofit conversation is complete without mentioning utility rebates. While programs vary, combining LED efficiency with luminaire-level lighting controls can significantly increase rebate potential and reduce grid demand.

“Retrofits are an easy way for customers to begin—or strengthen—their sustainability journey while reducing their carbon footprint,” Becky adds.

Smarter upgrades. Lower impact. Stronger specs.
