Brighton Dam's
Azalea Garden
|
At Beyond Behnke’s we envision a community where gardeners can come to share stories of their successes, ask questions, and get answers. We see a world where gardening and nature can bring people together to celebrate the joy of growing plants.

How could I have lived in this area my whole life and never have known about the Brighton Dam's Azalea Garden? This week while checking my Facebook posts (doesn't everyone do this?) I came across the most beautiful photos from my friend Nancy Janson. Where in the world was she? Imagine my surprise when she wrote right back and said she was at Brighton Dam!
Of course, I knew where that was and might have even driven by it a time or two, but I never knew about their Azalea Garden. Pretty much my entire life, Spring was for working

Plant Ahead For Summer Color
|
We are approaching a transitional period in the perennial garden. Late spring color is bursting forth, with terrific plants such as Siberian Iris and Peonies. It seems now that color abounds in gardens and the nursery, but in early to late June, there is a bit of a lull until the late-season perennials begin to come into color.
Perennials are either spring-blooming or summer/fall blooming, but seldom both. Okay, I know there are reblooming German Iris, and some cool-evening-loving plants like Dianthus might come back into bloom. Still, as a rule of thumb, you have spring perennials with short blooming periods and summer bloomers with long blooming cycles.

Fairy Garden Log Thatched House
|
This thatched roof tree stump fairy house is a fine example of how fairies can turn anything into a home. They turned a gnarled old stump into a cute house that even an old gnome would love. The house has a wide, thatched roof that sits on top of the stump. There is an arched wooden door, a shuttered window, some flower boxes, and the climbing vines with blooms. Placing this little house in your garden will make the magical fairies smile.

Bryanna’s Love was founded in honor of Bryanna Kitchen, who was diagnosed with Early T-cell Precursor Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ETP-ALL) only 3 weeks after her 9th birthday. Bryanna was admitted into Children’s National Medical Center in Washington DC on August 1st, 2016 where she stayed for the duration of her battle with ETP-ALL. Bryanna passed away only three short months later on October 24th, 2016. Among the few things that gave her the strength to smile during this time were the many stuffed animals and the blanket she received, which stayed on her bed throughout treatment. It is through that experience that Bryanna’s Love, Inc will provide the same comfort to the patients and families battling childhood cancer.

So many weekends we would see Bryanna and her family at Behnke's shopping for what would make them happy. Bryanna and her brother and sister were always having fun as most children did at the garden center. Then this diagnosis of Leukemia happened and we had to watch this family deal with what no family ever should.
Before the nursery closed, many of you donated stuffed animals to the foundation Bryanna's Love and their program Give Kids A Snuggle. Then you came out to their first Walk in honor of Bryanna. Now they are having a virtual Walk on Saturday, May 15, 2021, and I hope you can join me as I walk to help other families that are going through the unbearable.
