Outside the Box: Turtle races provide more than entertainment

The box turtles at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center normally do not shy away from attention. Among the several different species cared for by dedicated staff, the box turtles are used to all eyes on them, as they entertain families with their slow movements and gentle demeanor, and educate children during camps and in classrooms. They even travel offsite for educational purposes and events in the community.

But this November five box turtles will embark on a new adventure: turtle racing.
Variety of lessons, programs and competitions available for all levels

From beginner lessons to competitive play, Norris Recreation Center has a tennis program suitable for every member of the family. For younger players, there are a variety of options to choose from depending on age and level. Ages 4-8 start with the fundamentals of the game, and as they continue lessons, build on such skills as hand-eye coordination, serving techniques and stroke development.
