Before a child can read a single word, they need someone to read to them. For just one hour a week, you can be that someone. As an OTTER volunteer, you'll spend 30-minutes with little ones from three to five years old, turning picture books into adventures, rhymes into games, and the alphabet into a song worth singing. Through interactive read-alouds and small-group play, you'll help children discover that books open from the front, words travel left to right, and "cat," "hat," and "bat" are a lot more fun together. If you love bringing stories to life and enjoy watching young children’s faces light up at the turn of a page, this role is for you! We provide the books and training and you provide the voice and commitment.
The first five years are when a child's brain builds the foundation for everything that follows, and every word you share becomes part of it. We'll give you the early literacy training to make every session count, along with books you can read and gift to the children to build their home libraries. All you need is your voice, a love for books and reading, and one hour a week during the school day at a school in Orange County.
