What’s your most memorable HCCI workshop moment?

"The different mindsets that we see in our learners. For example, the first group I taught was made up of very seasoned clinicians. Some already had experience doing HBPC, while others, mostly internal medicine doctors from large practices, were just starting to explore getting into HBPC. As we presented and discussed different patient cases, the clinicians with prior HBPC experience tended to take a holistic approach toward treatment while the others (who were accustomed to high levels of support in a clinic or hospital) were more likely to want to order test after test or send patients to the emergency department. Part of what we’re doing in the workshops is helping clinicians learn to think in a fundamentally different way by looking at the whole picture—the patient, caregivers, home environment—and evaluating what is best for the patient." "As a resident, I was excited to take part in the workshop—it was a highlight just to be able to listen to and talk with home-based physicians and think about my future career. At the 2022 American Academy of Home Care Medicine Annual Meeting last month, James Warda, HCCI’s Vice President of External Affairs and Business Development, presented Driving Practice Growth through Marketing, Media Relations, and Your Community. The workshop taught participants how to share their stories and that of their practices through marketing, the media, and community outlets.

After the workshop, Dr. Christopher Paredes of Northwell Health Physician Partners, shared his personal story with Warda of how he got involved with house calls and why serving the underserved is his personal mission. “I grew up in Queens, New York. My mother (Dr. Tessie T. Paredes) was and is a solo internal medicine physician in Brooklyn, and my father was a retired colonel. As a teenager, I always wanted to borrow the car, and my mom said, ‘If you want to borrow the car, you’ll have to drive me to see my patients.’ So, I began driving her to these homes where I would usually see a frail, older person come to the door, and they always seemed happy to see my mother.”

• Manager, Outreach and Engagement – An upbeat individual who is a positive leader and has the natural ability to outreach, network, and promote the development of house call programs and our solutions and services to enhance the delivery of high-quality, efficient home-based medical care for all.
• Executive Assistant – Provides administrative support across all departments of the organization, which will include focused support for the Executive team.

Compared to the general population, homebound patients are more vulnerable to mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and cognitive impairment. In fact, one study found 40.5% of homebound elderly patients had a psychiatric disorder¹. Another study of homebound adults receiving delivered meals said 12.2% reported clinically significant depression and 13.4% reported suicidal thoughts².

To help HBPC providers assess and manage mental health disorders among their patients, HCCI recently collaborated with subject matter expert Dr. James Ellison, Director of the Swank Center for Memory Care and Geriatric Consultation at ChristianaCare, to develop its latest online course: Management of Mental Health Conditions in Homebound Patients.
