Framer's Tip -

Conservation framing is a method used to protect precious items like artworks and important documents from damage. One major threat is ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight and artificial light, which can cause fading, yellowing, and weakening of materials over time. To combat this, conservation framing uses special UV-protective glazing—either glass or acrylic—that filters out harmful UV rays.

This glazing acts like sunscreen for your valuables, significantly reducing the risk of UV damage and helping to keep colors vibrant and materials strong for much longer. While it doesn't eliminate all risks, using UV-protective glazing is a crucial step in preserving artworks, photographs, and memorabilia for future generations to enjoy.

At Frame of Mind, we often see firsthand how different framing choices impact artwork over time. Recently, a client brought in their print of "Glacier Jazz" by Mary Beth Percival for reframing. The difference between their print and a new one from our gallery was striking. Theirs had noticeably faded, a common issue when artwork is framed without UV protective glass, which guards against sunlight's damaging effects.

Our design team was thrilled to help refresh their cherished piece! First off, we pulled a new print for them then we carefully selected new matting and a frame that not only complemented the artwork but also enhanced its' presentation.

In contrast, our gallery's print of "Glacier Jazz," framed with UV protective glass, boasts the vibrant colors Mary Beth Percival intended. This comparison beautifully illustrates why UV protection is so important to preserving the beauty and longevity of your art. Our client is very excited to get a new print in its original condition!
