Happy Friday! We have a fun Fall farmers' market prepared for you tomorrow and are excited to introduce you to Strong Arm Baking, our new Guest Vendor. They'll be providing seasonal baked goods and fresh bread so be sure to swing by and check them out. Also, if you want to squeeze your workout in while visiting the market, bring your yoga mat and join us for  Soul Yoga. Registration starts at 9:00 am and the class is from 9:30-10:30 am. This event is part of the Art of Cool Fest and we're excited to share this program with our market community!

As a reminder, we're  partnering with the Diaper Bank fo North Carolina for a donation drive.  You can directly help our neighbors affecte d by Hurricane Florence by bringing the following  new items (in their  original packaging ) to the Info Table:

This week our certified organic SQUASH BLOSSOMS will be in plentiful supply. This is a certain variety of squash known for their large blossoms - a divine delicacy. Great stuffed with a soft goat or cow cheese and  lightly fried or sautéed. Mario should have them for several more weeks - enjoy them while we have them!

You might remember that I created this design from a story my wife Annamarie told me about growing up in East Tennessee. For a couple of summers during her childhood, the kids of her town participated in a scientific study. They gathered fireflies for scientists who planned to use them in medical research. Each evening, just after twilight, she and her friends would go out with their nets and find as many fireflies as they could, and then transfer them to large canning jars. Once a week, the scientists would meet the children at the school parking lot, weigh the insects they had caught, and pay them accordingly. One month, Annamarie was recognized as the second-best firefly catcher in Anderson County, Tennessee. . Her name was in the paper and everything. To recreate the firefly design, I dyed the garment yellow, then dropped warm wax onto it. When it was overdyed blue, and the wax removed, I had a green garment with a bunch of firefly "glows." The jar was silkscreened on some garments, batiked on others. The insects were added by rubberstamping the final product.

Maple Spring Gardens
Fall is officially here! Everyone on the farm is enjoying the transition to cooler days and nights and to the slightly less hectic pace that fall brings to the farm, not to mention a little change in diet after a summer full of tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant. We will still have lots of eggplant and peppers at market this week (and on until first frost), but we will also have an abundance of kale and collards - these cool season crops are loving the shift to cooler days. As many of you may know, collards (like many other cool season crops) hit peak flavor and sweetness after the first frost, but we have been amazed by how sweet and tender our collards are already this year and hope you will enjoy them as much as we have! Other things to look for at our stand this weekend include: shiitake mushrooms, ginger, muscadines, potatoes, butternut squash, seminole pumpkins, beans, lettuce, salad greens, nettles, hibiscus, cilantro, chives, parsley, lemongrass, and tulsi.

Chapel Hill Creamery
We've had 8 new calves born and will soon have a bigger supply of milk for our cheeses. Fall is always a busy season with special events and lots of cheese making.

Saturday  cheeses are Calvander, Dairyland Farmers, Hickory Grove, a little Danziger, and a little Carolina  Moon. Calvander is a great cheese to have on hand for cooking, salads, or snacking. It's been aged 71/2 months and it is firm enough to grate but smooth enough to enjoy with a glass of red wine. great in a frittata or on pasta.  We make Dairyland Farmers every week as it is unaged and moist which means it is best eaten fresh. Soft and tangy, it's a staple at our house. Add to any Mexican dish like tacos with our Chorizo sausage, Chile Rellanos, crackers with hot pepper jelly, or try our recipe for Market Salad with apples.   Hickory Grove and Danziger are both washed rind cheeses but made differently for different textures. Serve Hickory Grove with apples or melt for a great grilled cheese sandwich. Carolina Moon is a Camembert style and our Jersey cow milk makes it full of flavor. 

Our ground beef is back! Our beef is full of flavor from our grazing herd and makes a delicious cheeseburger with Hickory Grove cheese. Pick up some sausage for grilling or to add to peppers on polenta. Sausages include Mild Italian, Hot Italian, Smoked Andouille, Chorizo, Mild Country Breakfast, and Maple and Sage Breakfast Links. We also have a few pork chops, ground pork, smoked ham hocks, and a little bacon. All our pork is from our pigs who drink the nutritious whey from cheese making. Honeygirl Meadery
Honeygirl Meadery is a small urban meadery in downtown Durham, making an ancient craft beverage for modern days. Mead is essentially wine made from honey, with many different styles that include additions of fruits, flowers and herbs. Our meads are hand-crafted libations made in small batches, using both local and global true source honey, local fruits, herbs and flowers. They are naturally gluten free. Our downtown Durham Tasting Room is open on Fridays from 3-7 pm, Saturdays from 1-6 pm and Sundays from 1-5 pm.

This week we will be sampling: our Apple Cyser Mead , this is the mead version of a hard cider, and ours is a dry-style cyser with crisp, tart apple highlights. A blend of four apple varieties from western NC contributes both tart and sweet cider notes.

We will also be sampling our new release of Strawbanero Mead, a lightly sweet mead with fresh strawberries and a spicy kick. Fermented with NC strawberries, wildflower honey and infused with habanero peppers to bring a little heat.

And we will also be sampling our Lavender Mead , an infusion of fresh-dried local lavender flowers from Sunshine Lavender Farm in our orange blossom traditional semi-sweet mead.

We will also have bottles available of our Mango Habanero Mead, made with earthy clover honey, tropical mangos and infused with spicy habanero peppers; and our Strawberry Mead , made with local strawberries and NC wildflower honey.

Current varieties available include peach, pear, kiwi, strawberry, sweet onion and pepper jam. Our award winning jams and jellies are made in small batches using local ingredients. Our family has made jams for multiple generations and we are happy to share with our customers.

All of Hurtgen Meadows produce, plants, fruits and flowers are naturally grown using sustainable practices - no synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers are ever used on our farm. 

The Spicy Hermit
The Spicy Hermit crafts traditional and seasonal kimchi using fresh produce from local farms (including those at Durham Farmers' Market!) and time-honored fermentation methods. What is kimchi? Simply put, kimchi is a delicious product resulting from seemingly magical alchemy of vegetables and spices. All kimchi from The Spicy Hermit is raw, gluten-free, and vegan, and manufactured at each produce's seasonal peak.  

Our current offerings are:  green cabbage and butternut squash. Come early to get best selection! Try them as a side dish, like pickles, or as seasoning for dips or sauces.

I hope all of you are recovering from the Hurricane. After record rain in our area, our home was flooded with one foot of water on the bottom floor. We are cutting out walls and carpet and trying to dry out.

We will be at market  on Saturday with EGGS, COLORFUL PEPPERS, OKRA, SUCCULENTS, ALOE, AND MUMS. Thank goodness all the JAMS, PICKLES, CHOW CHOW, and PICKLED OKRA were 
moved to the main floor. Stop by cause I need a hug!

Elodie Farms is a small goat dairy located in Rougemont, NC, a mere 30 minutes away from downtown Durham. We raise free-range goats and use their milk to make fresh cheeses and the whey leftover is used to make crunchy crackers that pair perfectly with our cheeses. We also make cajeta (spreadable goat milk caramel), blackberry goat cheese mousse, and goat cheesecake. My name is Gabriela Kavanaugh and I am owner and roaster for Caballo Rojo Coffee, roasting locally here in Durham. My grandfather was a leading coffee roaster in Venezuela and I wanted to continue this family tradition in my local community. To ensure we respect tradition, we source wholesome ingredients before steaming them in banana leaves, creating a flavorsome and aromatic product. This week I am featuring passion flowers. These exotic flowers look like they arrived from another planet! They can be found growing on vines in ditches in our area. Duke Gardens also has some in the White Garden and climbing porch posts.

I have a wide selection of photographic greeting cards featuring iconic spots around  Durham, the OBX, Flowers, Fantasy, Animals, Whimsy, and astronomical images. If you don't see a subject you are looking for, just ask - I may have it.  This week's image is of a passion flower, of course!

Parking & Street Information
The market is located at 501 Foster Street in the Pavilion at Durham Central Park.  Parking can be found on the street around the market, in the Ballpark Parking Lot on Corporation Street and in the Measurement Inc. lot, 423 Morris Street (look for the Durham Farmers' Market parking sign). There is a path at the bottom of that parking lot that leads you to the market. There are also public parking lots along Foster Street and on Morgan Street near the Carolina Theatre.  

Handicap parking is available on Foster Street, right next to the south entrance of the pavilion.

Please note that the Durham Farmers' Market does not allow dogs or other pets in the market area during Market hours.  Service animals are exempt from this rule.

Leashed pets are welcome elsewhere throughout Durham Central Park.
