A Place of Sanctuary
Bringing The Grotto to You
Daily Spiritual Reflection

“Mary was able to turn a stable into a home for Jesus, with poor swaddling clothes and an abundance of love. She is the handmaid of the Father who sings his praises. She is the friend who is ever concerned that wine not be lacking in our lives. She is the woman whose heart was pierced by a sword and who understands all our pain. As mother of all, she is a sign of hope for peoples suffering the birth pangs of justice. She is the missionary who draws near to us and accompanies us throughout life, opening our hearts to faith by her maternal love. As a true mother, she walks at our side, she shares our struggles and she constantly surrounds us with God’s love.” - Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium, 286.

Holy Mary,
you are my example of faithfully living in Christ.
At the birth of Jesus your praised God for the gift of your son.
When your friend’s wedding wine ran short you trusted God’s providence.
At the death of Jesus, you lived through your pain and grief with hope in God’s Love.
Mary, pray for me and my family.
Pray that in all that we are experiencing in this uneasy moment we will deepen our trust in God’s blessing upon us.
Be our companion through this time sharing our struggles, surrounding us with the Father’s love and reminding us to praise God for His blessings.
Amen.

Your support will help The Grotto continue its ministry through this difficult time.

Bringing The Grotto to You

We will continue to share a piece of The Grotto with you each day until Masses resume and our gardens open. We hope this feature brings you joy.

Today we have some exciting news to share. In perhaps the first step toward reopening, The Grotto Gift Shop will open tomorrow. There will be strict guidelines for shopping, and the rest of The Grotto will remain closed. However, we are pleased to be making this first step.

Please read on to learn more about our wonderful shop, which has been serving the Catholic community for more than 70 years.
Day 64: The Grotto Gift Shop
The Gift Shop Opens Tomorrow

We are very excited to announce that The Grotto Gift Shop will reopen tomorrow, May 19. Temporary hours will be 9 a.m - 5:30 p.m. Only the shop will be open; the gardens and chapel are not open at this time.

Strict social distancing policies will be in place, and we ask that our customers please respect the guidelines.
Gift Shop Reopening Guidelines

Our employees will all be wearing masks and practicing social distancing. We have installed clear partitions at the registers. We are cleaning and sanitizing beyond what is required in the governors guidelines for reopening retail shops.

We have placed distance markers to assist shoppers and staff. We require that all customers maintain a minimum of six feet of distance between other shoppers. Shoppers must sanitize hands before entering and we request shoppers wear masks.

During this early phase of reopening, we will be obtaining a phone number or email from all who enter for contact tracing. The information will not be used for any other purpose and will be destroyed once the time frame for contact tracing has passed. We do this solely for the well-being of our customers and staff.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation.
Please do not come to The Grotto Gift Shop if you are feeling ill.
The Grotto Gift Shop

Set among towering trees and native shrubs, the Gift Shop greets all visitors entering from the main parking lot. This building was dedicated February 5, 1995, by Portland Archbishop William J. Lavada.
Serving the Community for more than 70 Years

When the Chapel of Mary was built in the 1950s, a gift shop was built where the current Visitor Center stands. Before that, a smaller gift shop served those who visited The Grotto.

While the buildings may have changed and the location of the shop moved, The Grotto Gift Shop has been serving the local community for more than 70 years.

The photo below is from a 1957 advertisement in The Star newspaper. Interestingly, all these years later, the phone number listed is still the main phone number for The Grotto.
Supporting The Grotto

The proceeds of The Grotto Gift Shop help The Grotto continue its ministry of being a sanctuary of peace, prayer and natural beauty.

The Grotto is a self-supporting nonprofit, and would not exist without the support of gift shop customer and donors.

We are going to need you more than ever in the upcoming months.

As people of faith, we seek ways to nourish our faith, share our faith and celebrate our faith. We rejoice in life's milestones.
