The University of Bath, School of Management

Dear BAB Members,

At the University of Bath, School of Management, we pride ourselves on being a leading UK business school, producing world-class research and high-calibre graduates. The strength of the University community is proven in our title of University of the Year in The Times and Sunday Times Complete University Guide 2023.

Our commitment to excellence is attested by consistently high rankings. In the latest national league tables, we placed top five across all undergraduate disciplines. These include Business and Management, Accounting and Finance and Marketing (The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023, The Complete University Guide 2024 and The Guardian University Guide 2023). Notably, we have been 1st in the UK for Marketing in The Complete University Guide for eight consecutive years.

Globally, we rank top 100 in the QS graduate employability outcomes. This marks us as one of the best places to study in the world, in terms of students’ onward prospects. The University of Bath was rated strongly in terms of partnerships and reputation among employers, with a graduate employment rate of 95.6% 12 months after graduation.

As for research, 93% was assessed as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent' in the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF). According to the Times Higher Education's REF analysis, we placed 7th in the UK for business and management studies.

But we don’t want to stop there. Building on over half a century of experience, we’re working on plans to help us inspire and innovate for the next 50 years and beyond. Our Small Business Charter award marks our excellence, recognising our expertise in supporting small businesses, student entrepreneurship and engagement in the local economy.

Making connections is a big part of successful business and we’re helping to shape the next generation of professionals. Our esteemed reputation proves we teach the right skills, but our course curriculums also emphasize the importance of sustainability and corporate responsibility. Business isn’t separate from society; we want our graduates to consider their impact on the wider world. Work like this is why our commitment to sustainability is recognised by The Principles of Responsible Management Education initiative.

We work with charities, SMEs and multinational corporations based across the globe, offering international placement opportunities to our students. These include Valerie, who is the Event Intern at British American Business. These connections build lifelong skills that are demonstrated through and somewhat rely upon our alumni. Some of whom still work at their placement company in highly successful careers.

There are many ways you can get involved with the School of Management. One of these is our partnership opportunities. Offering a six- or 12-month work placement is a great way to start building relationships with future graduate recruits whilst gaining international insights from UK students.

ARTICLE SERIES: Principles of Investing for American Citizens Living in the UK - Principle 7: Plan for the Next Generation

Although winning the title of the “richest person in the graveyard” is an accolade few of us will care for or personally benefit from, estate planning is a crucial component of many client’s financial plans, especially for those who have both US and UK inheritance tax (IHT) to contend with. Unfortunately, formalising our estate plans can commonly be left as an afterthought until goals in our own lifetimes are met, such as purchasing our first home, putting our children through university, or investing for retirement.

NEWS: Changes to Flexible Working Regime in the UK – What Employers Need to Know

On July 20, 2023, UK’s Employment Relations (Flexible Working) Bill 2023 received Royal Assent and is currently expected to come into force in Summer 2024, though a precise date has not yet been confirmed by the government. The new Act does not make flexible working a “day 1” right, and the eligibility requirements remain the same. The government has indicated, however, that it will create this “day 1” employment right through secondary legislation, though no such legislation has yet emerged, and this is not an issue covered by the Act.
