Announcements and News

New officers of BPC's Presbyterian women for 2024-25 are Sherrill McCrery (moderator), Christy Kennedy, Dianne Mapp, Sheanny Hardjasudarma, Theda Dyar, Ruth Ann Folsom, Kay Hummel, Golda Young, and Lynn Stewart. The installation ceremony was held last Sunday during the Fellowship Luncheon and PW Birthday event.

Congratulations to Dr. Linda Nall, who was chosen to receive the prestigious Life Membership Award. Here are comments from her introduction (which was kept a surprise until the event): "Selection as an Honorary Life Member in the Presbyterian Church USA is a major honor. It is rooted in a tradition that began in 1912 in recognition of a commitment to Christ and the mission of the church. It is offered in recognition and thanks for a record of faithful service.

"This year’s recipient is someone who can easily be described as “always there when needed” and as “caring and supportive.” She has supported the mission of the Presbyterian Church USA and of Broadmoor Presbyterian in word and deed since joining here on February 9, 1965. She has given of her time, talents, and leadership at so many programs and events that have occurred during these past 59 years.

"PW events – she’s there, participating in Circle, volunteering, serving as a PW Council officer.

"At BPC – Preparing for communion services, lining up ushers, serving on the Session and mission committees, managing our library, and assisting with so many special events. She’s a Sunday School regular and a fun competitor at the monthly game nights. And, of course, for many years, she has been a very important part of our Choir.

"How she got here – Her mom was from Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and her dad was from a family of mechanical engineers who worked for the railroad. Her dad was working for the Cotton Belt in Pine Bluff when he met her mom. Working with the railroad led the family to Tyler, Texas, where she grew up. While in middle school she read Horatio Hornblower, which led to her interest in sailing. She had her own boat, sailed regularly, and taught sailing to young people. She’s traveled extensively, especially with a group from First Presbyterian.

"Beyond our walls – she is quite the Woman of Substance.

She is a graduate of Hendrix College and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine (1963), completing her internship in internal medicine at the LAC-USC Medical Center. It was then that her mother died; she got homesick; and looked for a school close to Tyler to do her residency, which brought her to Shreveport and the LSU School of Medicine.

"During her 61-year working career in medicine, there were many milestones before her retirement in 2020. Among them: she became the first person to hold the LSU School of Medicine’s prestigious endowed professorship in radiology, was vice chair of the Department of Radiology, section chief of mammography and ultrasound, and coordinator of the radiology courses for medical students during their radiology rotations. She was awarded the Honorary Chairman’s Award in radiology at a ceremony, during which her department chair said, “Without her, the department would not exist.” She has been a major donor to the medical school and to numerous other causes, many of them political.

"There is so much more about this remarkable woman that we don’t know, but we do know that she goes above and beyond. We will miss her greatly as she retires to Texas this summer – but we expect her to visit often.

"She considers Broadmoor Presbyterian her family and we consider her ours.

"By now, I’m sure most of you know that our honoree is Dr. Linda Nall.

"Thank you for being such a vital part of the caring and supportive community of Presbyterian Women, Broadmoor Presbyterian Church, and the larger world."

Broadmoor Presbyterian Church is called by God to Love, Serve, Worship, and Grow as a community of faith in Jesus Christ.

Our Vision Statement

God challenges us:

-To love the Lord our God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength and our neighbors as ourselves;

-To serve the Lord with gladness and to share God's blessings with the world, especially those who suffer from need or abuse;

-To worship the Lord by lifting our hearts in praise, making a joyful noise to our rock and our redeemer and gathering around the "watchposts" of the Reformed tradition: the font, the table, and the pulpit;

-And to grow in faith through the study of God's word and the use of our gifts and talents as disciples of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
