We will leave from the church at 9:30 a.m. Please click here or call the church office 865-982-6192 to make a reservation.
Broadway UMC will be welcoming new Maryville College students as part of their Faith Community Fair on Sunday, August 19. What could be more welcoming than some home baked cookies! If you’d like to support these efforts, please bring your home-baked goods to the church the morning of August 19. It would be helpful to have them pre-wrapped or bagged in single servings (2-3 cookies per bag) that can be handed out.
Thank you for your support.

Children’s Sunday School
Do you attend Sunday School at 9:00 and enjoy the 11:15 worship service? Are you wondering what to do with yourself the hour between Sunday School and the 11:15 service? We just happen to be looking for Sunday school teachers for the 10:00 hour!
Beginning in September, we will have a children’s Sunday School class that will meet the needs of families who are attending the 11:15 Contemporary service. We will not be closing the 9:00 Sunday School class, so this will mean acquiring additional teachers to serve. Ideally, the rotation is once every eight weeks. But by all means if you would like to teach more often we will accommodate you!
We do have some young children in the church. Right now, older elementary seem to be coming to the 9:00 Sunday School hour. But for the 10:00 hour we have 4 Kindergarteners, a first grader and a second grader. We also have 2 one-year olds and a soon to be one-year old who will be ready for a preschool Sunday School before we know it. These are all kids who are part of our church but not currently attending Sunday school but with the move of the contemporary service to 11:15 some parents have requested Sunday School for their kids.
The curriculum we use is Cokesbury’s Deep Blue which also uses a 5-minute video with the lesson. If you have more questions about our children’s Program for the fall, or if you would like to join our team of teachers, please email
Getting to Know our Immigrant Neighbors
We are offering a 4 week Sunday School program on Immigration that is open to everyone. Representatives from the Allies of Knoxville’s Immigrant Neighbors (AKIN) will serve as teachers and facilitators. The goal is to help congregations learn more about immigrant families and immigration issues. Topics include what immigrants leave behind, their experience upon arriving, the reasons they leave their countries, etc. We have a very active ministry with Hispanic children and their families so it would help us learn more about their lives. The classes are being scheduled for four Sundays in September (September 9, 16, 23 and 30). Sessions will be offered in the Fellowship Hall during the 9:00 a.m. Sunday School time. Classes would be appropriate for adults and youth. We are alerting Sunday School classes now so that you can decide if you would like to participate as a class. Participation is optional.
Another Opportunity
Blount County United (BCU) Education Committee and Blount County Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) is hosting an opportunity to meet our immigrant neighbors on Thursday, August 30 at Monte Vista Baptist Church, 1735 Old Niles Ferry Rd. You will be able to hear the personal stories of several area residents with a range of immigration experiences, followed by discussion with the audience. The evening begins with an informal meet and greet and light refreshments at 6:00 p.m. and then a panel discussion from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Conversations About The Way Forward
You may or may not be aware that The United Methodist Church has scheduled a special session of General Conference for February 23-26, 2019. There is deep disagreement about what The United Methodist Church should teach about homosexuality, same-gender marriage, and the ordination of LGBTQ persons. The special session will be held to consider these issues and how they will be addressed by The United Methodist Church in the future. Pastor Laura is offering a 4 week study to help us learn more about the process and the various views and possibilities. We will use a resource called Living Faithfully: Human Sexuality and The United Methodist Church. The Study will be offered on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. beginning on September 11. You can access more information and news releases at If you would like a copy of the book we will be using, please contact the church office. The cost is $10.

Smoky Mountain District Celebration
On Sunday, September 9 there will be a special gathering to celebrate our new district. If you weren’t aware, Holston Conference has reduced the number of districts from 12 to 9. Our new district is called the Smoky Mountain District (we used to be the Maryville District). The gathering begins with District Conference at 3:00 p.m. at Mountain View United Methodist Church, 3200 Maryville Pike in Knoxville. Following the District Conference (probably starting at about 4:00 p.m.) there will be an Ice Cream Contest in support of Camp Wesley Woods. Each church is invited to submit a homemade ice cream entry. Then everyone who attends gets to taste all of the entries for free. Votes for the best ice cream are measured by donations (so vote with your dollars). Everyone is also asked to bring homemade cookies. Please plan to attend and we’re also looking for someone who is willing to represent Broadway in the Ice Cream Contest. Contact the church office or click here for more information.
