Stanley Bauman Picture Library at Stonehill College

Born on April 25, 1913, Stanley A. Bauman, was a life-long resident of Brockton. He began taking photographs in the 1930s. By the time of his death in 2007, Mr. Bauman took over 500,000 negatives primarily of Brockton and Southeastern Massachusetts.

In 1997, Mr. Bauman announced that he would leave his collection to Stonehill College after his death. The bulk of the collection is negatives dating between 1946 and 2002. There are a limited number of negatives taken between 1934 and 1941. Unfortunately, when Mr. Bauman enlisted in the Army in March 1942, he burned many of the negatives he believed weren't important because he had a premonition that he wouldn't return home.

39th Annual Rev. Dr. Luther King Breakfast

On Sat Jan 18, The Brockton Area Branch NAACP held their 39th Annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Breakfast at Envision Hotel. The theme was "King, Women, and America". Regional community members, leaders, activists, and dignitaries were in attendance to celebrate and reflect on the legacy of Dr. King and the contributions of women in America.

Reverend Johnson earned her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Howard University, as well as multiple advanced degrees, including a Master's in Theological Studies with a focus on Religion, Ethics, and Politics from Harvard Divinity School, a Master's in Sacred Theology from Boston University School of Theology, and a Master's in Education from Harvard Graduate School of Education. Her scholarly work in the field of religion is deeply inspired by her interest in how memory, identity, and faith interconnect.

Godspell: This immensely successful rock opera needs little introduction, but when it was first produced on Broadway in 1971 it broke new ground in its stage treatment of the historical Jesus Christ. This is the first major musical theatre offering from three-time Grammy and Academy Award winner, Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Children of Eden). Godspell is based on the Gospel according to St Matthew as it deals with the last days of Jesus and includes dramatized versions of several well-known parables. And yet it is something more – a religious experience, a demonstration of joy, and a celebration of the family of man. Dissolving hauntingly into the Last Supper and the Crucifixion, Jesus’ messages of kindness, tolerance, and love come vibrantly to life.

Climate Can Do: Transform Food Waste into Healthy Soil

Composting is a great way to turn any food scraps into a soil supplement that is beneficial for your yards and gardens in the springtime and indoor plants you keep year-round. After you buy a compost bin (or build your own using materials like wood or cinder blocks), follow these steps to start creating your own compost:

  1. Build a 4-6 inch layer of carbon-rich material like dry leaves, twigs, shredded cardboard, or shredded paper/brown bags. (Make sure the cardboard is not waxy and covered with tape or glue!)
  2. Then layer in your nitrogen-rich material. This includes fruit & veggie scraps, coffee grounds, paper filters, crushed eggshells, and grass clippings.
  3. Continue layering these materials, making sure that there are about 2-3 times more carbon-rich materials in your compost. This will help air circulate!
  4. Occasionally mix the materials together and make sure they remain damp like a wet sponge. If your mixture is too wet, add more carbon-rich material.

It is natural for the compost to heat up when you mix it. When this no longer happens, or when all the visible food scraps have decomposed, let the compost sit for at least a month before using it. Overall, the process takes three to five months to make compost. If you do not mix the pile, it can take as long as a year for the process to finish! By reducing our food waste, we can all help reduce our carbon footprint!

Heartfelt Thanks For BAHN

The Brockton Area Hunger Network (BAHN) Cooperative Intake Program, now in its 4th year, is the first initiative of its kind in Massachusetts. Using shared client intake software, a group of local food pantries has better insight into the full picture of food insecurity in our area.

In 2020, The Charity Guild was invited by the City of Brockton to propose an innovative cross-agency program to unify the client intake processes of local food pantries. Addressing food insecurity in Brockton is a community-wide effort that no single agency can tackle alone. The initial proposal was funded through a grant from Beth Israel Lahey Health.

With member agencies using a shared intake system, we've streamlined the process of receiving food, significantly reducing wait times, better connecting neighbors to local food programs, and giving community

members more time for their daily needs. Clients receive a shared BAHN card that they present at all the member food pantries. Using the card has no impact on clients' abilities to receive SNAP benefits.

In March 2024, BAHN's Cooperative Intake Program received a grant from Liberty Mutual Foundation, administered equally among BAHN partner agencies by The Charity Guild. We're so grateful that these organizations understand the importance of supporting a unified intake system to have a full understanding of the scope of food insecurity in our community.

Huddled Together

With the wind blowing outside, it reminds me how much warmth - both actually and figuratively, we get when we "huddle together." Working together to feed off of each other's energy.

"Some days I felt so isolated and overwhelmed, but my huddle of close girlfriends truly gave me the strength, courage, love and support to keep going."

~ Emily Fawcett

“There is immense power when a group of people with similar interests gets together to work toward the same goals.”

~ Idowu Koyenikan

“Teamwork is not a game for the selfish.

It is for those with the mindset that a win for one is a win for all.”

~ Michael Bassey Johnson

“We can only reach the highest height, if we encourage each other.” ~ Lailah Gifty Akita

Football players continue the game through all kinds of weather... getting their plan of action and grounding from the huddle, busting through to give it their all. Seems like the perfect metaphor on how to get through the cold & dark of winter.
