38th Annual Holiday Parade Brings Brockton Community Together for the Season!
This week, the City of Brockton held its 38th Annual Holiday Parade! A city-wide celebration, the parade is a truly special tradition that unites greater Brockton in music, dancing, history, and holiday cheer. Thanks to the City of Brockton, the Brockton Police Department, and all the local businesses, organizations, and hardworking volunteers who participated and helped coordinate the event, this year's festivities featured awesome holiday floats, miniature train rides, performances by the Matta Dance Academy, Brockton Public Schools marching bands, Brockton Firefighters Pipes and Drums, and more!
In addition to the spirited marching and performances of BPD, BFD, city officials, veterans, Brockton organizations, businesses, and local youth performers, Brockton Police with Chief Brenda Perez, Sergeant Nicole Anderson, Captain Mark Porcaro, and Cadet Maldine Monteiro, the city coordinated the first ever Winter Wonderland Extravaganza.
Following the parade, the community gathered within the massive tent at 26 School Street for hot chocolate and coffee donated by Starbucks. There were snacks, arts and crafts, Victorian Carolers, Mrs. Claus, an elf, the Grinch, and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer!
There is no better way to spend the holidays than together. Every year, Brockton commences the season of giving by reminding us of that. Thank you to the Shannon Community Safety Initiative, the City of Brockton, and each and everyone who came out and enjoyed the parade for bringing the spirit of Christmas and of Brockton to life.

The History of Silly Putty
Since rubber-producing countries were attacked in WW II, drastically affecting supply chains, the U.S. government asked American companies to invent synthetic rubber made with easy-to-find ingredients.
In 1943, engineer James Wright, while researching a synthetic rubber at General Electric in New Haven, CT., combined boric acid and silicone oil that produced an interesting gob of goo.
Wright conducted a multitude of tests on the substance and discovered it could bounce and stretch farther than regular rubber, didn't collect mold, and had a very high melting temperature. The material wasn't usable as rubber but was entertaining. He passed his "nutty putty" around to family and friends.
Ruth Fallgatter, owner of a toy store in New Haven, CT., was approached by advertising consultant Peter Hodgson In 1949 with globs of the goo to sell for $2 each. The "bouncing putty" outsold everything else except for the 50-cent box of Crayola crayons.
Hodgson saw an opportunity and bought a large quantity of the putty in 1950. He had the putty separated into one-ounce balls and placed inside red plastic eggs. He named the goo "Silly Putty" and sold the eggs for $1 each.
In February 1950, Hodgson took Silly Putty to the International Toy Fair in New York. He convinced both Nieman-Marcus and Doubleday bookstores to stock the putty.
A few months later, a reporter for The New Yorker stumbled across Silly Putty at a Doubleday bookstore and took home an egg. Fascinated, the writer wrote an article in the "Talk of the Town" section that appeared on August 26, 1950. Orders for Silly Putty started pouring in immediately.

Kindness
Yes, Kindness
“Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make makes you. Choose wisely.”
~ Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart
“The lotus is the most beautiful flower, whose petals open one by one. But it will only grow in the mud. In order to grow and gain wisdom, first you must have the mud --- the obstacles of life and its suffering. ... The mud speaks of the common ground that humans share, no matter what our stations in life. ... Whether we have it all or we have nothing, we are all faced with the same obstacles: sadness, loss, illness, dying and death. If we are to strive as human beings to gain more wisdom, more kindness and more compassion, we must have the intention to grow as a lotus and open each petal one by one.” ~ Goldie Hawn
“Tenderness and kindness are not signs of weakness and despair, but manifestations of strength and resolution.” ~ Kahlil Gibran
“Do your little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.” ~ Desmond Tutu

“Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.”
~ Lao-Tzu
Being kind to each other is a good place to start. ~ Jacquie
